Charles E. Behringer

Mr. Charles E. Behringer, 83, of Altona, Ill. died 10:39 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2015 at Royal Oakes Care Center, Kewanee, Ill.  

He was born February 6, 1932 in Galesburg, Ill. to Harold B. and Mary Gum Behringer.  The Behringer’s, in 1936, moved to a farm east of Altona which remains the family farm today.  Charles attended Brown Elementary School, Altona High School and Monmouth College, Monmouth, Ill.  On August 12, 1951 he was married to Dorothy I. Pyle of Altona.  Charles served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.  After the service he returned to Altona to work the family farm until his retirement.  While living in Illinois, Charles was a member of the Ekstedt-Hurr American Legion, Altona, Knox County Farm Bureau, the Altona Lions Club and the Altona Elevator  Board.  He severed as a member of the Knox County Board and two terms as a Knox County Precinct Committeeman.  He also served as an elder in the Altona Presbyterian Church.  He then spent the following twenty years in Daytona Beach, Fla. Where he enjoyed playing golf and volunteering for the Red Cross. In 1996 he returned to Altona due to health issues.  

Charles is survived by his wife, Dorothy of 63 years, a son, Charles Richard “Dick” (and Nancy) of Hot Springs, Ark., a daughter, Patricia (and Drew) Rader of Avon, Colo., two grandsons, Charles Dustin “Dusty (and Beth) Behringer and Joseph Ian (and Rose Marie) Behringer and four great grandchildren.  

Cremation will be accorded.  Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the United Church of Altona.  Pastor David Pyell will officiate.  There will be no visitation.  Interment will follow the service in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Altona with Military Rites.  Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
