Dr. Walter J. Zich

Dr. Walter, J. Zich, 91, of Galesburg, died at 11:35 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Heartland Health Care, Galesburg.
 
Walter J. Zich M.D. was born February 20, 1924, in St. Louis, Mo.  He was reunited with his loving wife, Veronica M. Zich on February 28th.  They had been married for 63 years.  Walter is survived by his seven children: Michael (Lynn) Zich of Dunn, N.C.; Jane Zich (John Steinhelber) of Fairfax, Calif.; Marianne (Kevin) McCarthy of Granger, Ind.; Margaret (Mark) Precup of Chandler, Ariz.; Walter (Nathenia) Zich Jr. of Peoria; John Zich (Anne Ryan) of Chicago; and Peter (Carol) Zich of Elmhurst. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; five great­-grandchildren; and one sister, Marie Lebron.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Veronica Zich; his parents, John and Maria Zich; his brother, Reverend John Zich; his sisters, Bernice Zich and Helen Thielker; and his daughter-in-law, Gynell Zich.
 
Walter was first and foremost, a loving husband and father.  He was patient, kind, gentle and wise. Walter also had the best one-liners, playfully joking around with those who were lucky enough to know him. He had a tremendously strong faith.  Walter was very active in his church, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and was involved in the development of Costa School.  A St. Louis University Medical School graduate, Walter worked as a physician at St. Mary’s Hospital for decades.  During his time there, he served as Director of the Radiology Department, a term as Chief of Staff, and was instrumental in the building of the new St. Mary’s Hospital.  His children remember fondly and with great appreciation, all the times Dad’s patients would tell of his kindness and compassion.  Walter proudly served his country as a navigator of a B-17 during World War II.  
 
A visitation for Walter will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7th, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. The funeral service will follow at 11:00. Joseph A. Caracci

Joseph A. Caracci, 63, of Galesburg, formerly of Chicago, died at 4:45 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.

Per his wishes cremation rites will be accorded and his cremated remains scattered over the Grand Canyon.  No visitation or funeral is planned.  Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.

Harry E, Talley, Jr.


Harry E. Talley, Jr., age 74, died at 3:27 am on February 28, 2015 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born on April 20, 1940 in Monmouth, Illinois the son of Harry Edward Sr. and Clara Marie (Travis) Talley. He was reared and educated in Monmouth and attended Harding elementary, Central, and Monmouth High School. Harry proudly served during the Vietnam Conflict as a Engineer in the United States Army. He was formerly married to Mary Jane Lamb. Harry began employment with Bill Ross Plumbing and later worked at Gates Rubber Company in Galesburg, IL. Later in life, he relocated to California and worked for the school system there. Most recently, he worked for and retired from the Decker Brothers at Monmouth Metal Culvert as a metal worker and welder. Harry loved the mountains, being outdoors, hunting, fishing, motorcycles, cars, and guns. Harry is survived by two sons; Wayne (Kim) Talley and Mark (Janelle) Talley both of Burlington, IA, three daughters; Karen (David) Tweed of Galesburg, IL, Merri (Rod) Haight of Robbins, IA, and Judith Heath of Vinton, IA. He is survived by his grandchildren, Carissa and Drake Talley, Kirstie Everington, Brandon (Laura) and Ashleigh Tweed. Megan and Logan Talley, Kayla, Kelsey, and Kolton Haight, Natasha and Christian May, Erica and Elizabeth Chandler, Levi and Mary Kay Jones, Jordon Krotz, and Justin Purcell. Four sisters survive, Donna Sheese, Katie Parker, and Dixie (Robert) Reimolds, and Mary Ann Cole all of Monmouth, Illinois and two brothers, John ( Joyce) Talley of Marion, Illinois and Bill (Arletha) Talley of Monmouth, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Shawn Chandler, and three brothers.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois. His family will be present to receive friends from 11:00-1:00 on Wednesday before the service. Interment with Military Honors will follow the service in the Oquawka Cemetery. Betty A. Haynes

Betty A. Haynes, 88 of Oneida, Illinois died at 12:47 A.M. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg, Illinois. 

She was born on September 5, 1926 in Rio, Illinois the daughter of Harmon Carl and Bettie Anita Swanson. She attended school in Rio, Illinois and graduated from Alexis High School, Alexis, Illinois. She married Paul Haynes on March 31, 1945 in Rio, Illinois.

Surviving is her husband, Paul Haynes of Oneida, Illinois; two sons: Jerry (Barb) Haynes of Onarga, Illinois and Alan (Rachel) Haynes of Altona, Illinois; eight grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; two sisters: Ila Mae Herron of Pekin, Illinois and Joyce Huffman of Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Stephen Haynes, six brothers and two sisters.

Once married to Paul they moved to California where Paul was stationed in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946. Upon returning to Galesburg they started farming, moving to the farm at Oneida in 1952, then in 1957 to the farm at Altona.

Upon retirement from farming they moved Oneida, Illinois Betty was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona, Illinois. She was a devoted wife and mother. She loved her family dearly, along with quilting, crocheting, needlepoint and gardening. Family could always find her in the kitchen baking pies and rolls. She also collected thimbles.


Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Monday, March 2, 2015 at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home & Crematory in Oneida, Illinois. Rev. Tim Anderson Officiating. Richard W. Farquhar

Richard W. Farquhar, age 67, of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, passed away Monday February 23, 2015 in the Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He was born November 5, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Frank and Ruth Boyens Farquhar.

After graduation from high school, Richard served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. While on leave visiting family, he met and fell in love with Susan Christiano. They were wed on July 15, 1972 in West Palm Beach, Florida at St. Luke’s Catholic Church.

Richard pursued his Bachelor’s degree at Northern Illinois University and later received a Master’s degree from Florida Atlantic University. He was a valued employee of Palm Beach County, Florida, for twenty seven years. He was always up for a baseball game and enjoyed traveling, fun and family.

He is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Troiano of Lake City, Florida, one son Mathew (Amy) Farquhar of Jacksonville, Florida, one grandson, Joseph Troiana, one brother, Robert Farquhar of Columbus, Maryland, and two brothers in law, Michael (Therese) Christiano, and Jon Christiano.

The graveside service, with Military Rites, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday March 7, 2015 in the Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois. No visitation is planned. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is in charge of local arrangements. Condolences may be left at banksandbeals.com

Manuel "Manny" Padilla

Manuel “Manny” Padilla, 87, of Galesburg, died at 7:22 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Heartland Health Care, Galesburg.

Manny was born November 15, 1927 in Galesburg, the son of Joseph and Isabel Casillas Padilla.  He married June 13, 1953 in Galesburg.  Manny is survived by two sons, Kenneth J. (Denise) Padilla of Topeka, KS and M. Marc (Jamie) Padilla of Rock Island; one daughter, Mary T. (C.J. Johnson) Padilla of Galesburg; eight grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by three brothers, Richard, Joe (Pam), and Tony (Hope) Padilla all of Galesburg; four sisters, Sally Ponce, Jennie (Lupe) Vasquez, Mary Jo Schafer, Francis Cervantez, and Elizabeth (Dave) Ewing all of Galesburg.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara on May 20, 2000; a daughter, Cathy Kornegay on September 3, 2001; one sister, Helen Guerrero; and two brothers, Pato and Eddie Padilla.

Manny served in the US Army Air Corp.  Manny worked for 43 years at Maytag Corp. retiring in 1989.  After he retired, he volunteered at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.  Manny was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, was an Eucharistic minister, Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285, and a 4th Degree member of Father J.O. Hunt Knights of Columbus Council 556.  Most of all Manny loved spending time with his family.

The rosary will be prayed at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory.  Visitation will follow from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.  Funeral Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2015 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Galesburg.  Rev. William Miller, IC will officiate.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg.  Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ralph M. Ines Piamnote Mears

Ines Piamnote Mears, 87, of Galesburg, died at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.

Ines was born August 21, 1927 in Bogota, Columbia, the daughter of Jose and Marguerite Piamonte Vargas.  She worked as a secretary in Bogota for several years.  She then immigrated to the United States in the early 1960’s.  While living in New York City, Ines worked as a secretary. It was while living there she met Robert H. Mears, III.  They were married on May 25, 1963 in New York City. They then moved to Galesburg and she became a homemaker while their children were young.  She also helped teach the English Language for a few years when she first moved to Galesburg.  She eventually went back to work, working at the Job Service of Illinois. She also worked for a time at Lombard Middle School.  She then retired.

Ines was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Ines and Robert belonged to a bridge club for several years.  Most of all, Ines enjoyed spending her time surround by her family.

Ines is survived by one son, Thomas G. Mears of Galena, KS; one daughter, Nancy (Robert) Curry of Knoxville; and four grandchildren, Bianca Davies-Mears, Gabrielle Curry, Grace Curry, and Nash Curry. She was preceded in death by her husband on September 25, 2004; her parents; two brothers, Alfonso and Eduardo; and two sisters, Leonor and Cecilia.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2015 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m.  Rev. Msgr. Robert "Bob" L. Lindberg

Robert “Bob” L. Lindberg, 79 of Galesburg, Illinois died at 10:37 A.M. on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at his home.

He was born on March 24, 1935 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Edward D. and Jennie (Wilt) Lindberg.  He was raised and educated in Galesburg, Illinois.  He married the love of his life Trudy D.  Little on November 4, 1972 at  Coldbrook Christian Church.  She preceded him in death on March 23, 1988. 

Bob is survived by a son, Robert Lindberg, Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa; a daughter, Tammy (John) Rosenberg of Galesburg, Illinois; three grandchildren, John Patch, Crystal (Joey Richardson) Smith, and Phillip (Arin Miller) Smith; five great-grandchildren, Tyler and Kaylee Richardson, Kadyn and Owen Smith, and Lexi Miller; two brothers, Donald (Jackie) Lindberg of Kansas City, Missouri and Edward “Bud” (Glenda) Lindberg of Springfield, Missouri; and two sisters-in-law, Carol Williams of Galesburg, Illinois and Sherry (James) Henderson of Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie (Tadpole) Edwards, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jean and Mike Boyer, and his in-laws Bob and Ann Little.

Bob worked at The Traveling Welder for 42 years.  He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285, The Galesburg Moose Lodge, and The Eagles Club of Galesburg. 

Funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M. Monday, March 2, 2015 at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, Illinois.  Pastor Tyson Parks will be officiating.  Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Monday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, Illinois. Betty Joan McCoy

Betty Joan McCoy, 75, of Alexis, died at 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 in the Care Center of Abingdon, Abingdon, IL.

Betty was born at home in Elba Twp., rural Knox County, IL, the daughter of Clarence William and Lena Floell Hunter Emerick.  She married Donald Gene McCoy on January 1, 1957 in Lancaster, MO. They were married for over 57 years.  Don preceded her in death on April 16, 2014.  Betty is survived by two sons, Donald (Lisa) McCoy, Jr. of Abingdon and Ron (Kimberley) McCoy of Germantown Hills; one daughter, Brenda (Wes) Lovdahl of Monmouth; seven grandchildren, Stephen McCoy, Christina (Jeremy) Rowden, Andrew (Danielle) McCoy, Sara McCoy, Preston, Drew, and Alex Lovdahl; and three great grandchildren, Shealyn, Lochlan, and Aiden Rowden. She is also survived by two brothers, John R. (Carol) Emerick of Abingdon and James A. Emerick of Pana; and three sisters, Mary (James) Riley of Ziegler, Martha Haugen of Minneapolis, MN, and Judy (Herman) Cordle of Galesburg.  Along with her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Clarella Emerick and a brother in law, Gwynne Haugen.

Betty was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, collecting dolls and antiques.  She loved to be with her family, especially her grandchildren and supporting all their activities.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Colonial Baptist Church.  Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Pastor Darrell Grimm will officiate.  Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Elmwood Cemetery, Elmwood, IL.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Care Center of Abingdon. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family atwww.watsonthomas.com.

Richard E. Johnson

Mr. Richard E. “Dick” Johnson, 90, of Gilson, died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Seminary Manor.

Dick was born on March 20, 1924 in Joy, IL the son of Oscar H. and Della H. (McNeal) Johnson.  Dick enlisted in the USMC at the age of 17 to fight in WWII.  He served from September 3, 1942 to December 24, 1945.  While in the Marine Corp.  he was on the battlefield against the Japanese on Bougainville and in the Consolidation of the Solomon Island.  He also served in the Asiatic Pacific Area; New Caledonia; Solomon Islands; Falau Islands; and the Marianas Islands.  After he was discharged he came back home to marry Mary Jane McNamara whom he had met while working at the Aledo Times Record.  They were married January 19, 1946 in Aledo.  Dick went on to work on the section gang for C.B.&Q.  He also operated a fence installation business with his father and worked at Shale City Brickyard.  After he and Mary moved to Gilson, Dick worked for Asbury Waste in Galesburg for a few years, and then went to C.B.&Q. in 1955 as a laborer and eventually became an electrician retiring on July 29, 1985.

Dick enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting fishing and riding his 4-wheeler.  He also loved to bake brownies, fudge, pie and was well known for his homemade ice cream.  He also loved to drink coffee and read westerns.

Dick is survived by two sons, Richard E. (Carline) of Maquon and Norman L. (the late Janice) of Williamsfield; one daughter, Joyce (Kevin) Scholl of Wyoming; and two sisters, Donna Long of Aledo and Posie (Sam) Lafferty ofMoline.  He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Mack (Tiffany) Johnson, Eric Johnson, Beau (Amber) Johnson, Lacy (Cody) Niebuhr, Ethan Scholl and Treyton Scholl; and 5 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary on October 23, 2010, his parents, two brothers, John and Everett “Zeb”; and two sisters, Fione Folger and Bess Gamel.

Visitation will be 11 to 1 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at the Aledo Cemetery, Aledo, IL.  Memorials may be made to the Defenders of Freedom Veteran’s Home, Galesburg. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family atwww.watsonthomas.com. 

Mrs. Mary Ann Cherrington

Mrs. Mary Ann Cherrington,79, of Galesburg, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

Mary was born December 2, 1935 in Galesburg, the daughter of Harold Chauncey and Maud Shumacher Cochran.  She married Robert Glenn Cherrington, Sr. on September 12, 1953 in Kahoka, MO, he survives of Galesburg.  She is also survived by one son, Robert G. (Virginia) Cherrington, Jr. of Wataga; one daughter, Robin L. (Wayne) Bradshaw of Ocala, FL; and three grandsons, Mike and Matthew Cherrington, and Jacob Bradshaw.  She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Donna Jean Cherrington; one brother, Gene Cochran; and one sister, Betty Cherrington.
Mary loved to spend all her free time with her family and her cat Missy.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2015 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.  Rev. Mrs. Adris Y. Pierson

Mrs. Ardis Y. Pierson, 82, of Galesburg went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 in Heartland Health Care Center.

Ardis was born October 6, 1932 in Marquette, Kansas the daughter of C. Albin and Lillie Fern Adell. She married Paul E. “Pep” Pierson on August 21, 1960 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on January 14, 2013.

She is survived by her two sons, David F. (wife Kim) Pierson of O’Fallon, Illinois and Daniel R. Pierson of Galesburg; and seven grandchildren, Lindsay Pierson, Kyle Pierson, Andrew Pierson, Joshua Cameron “Cam” Pierson, Cathyrn “Caty” Pierson, Carter Pierson and Caleb Pierson. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her two brothers, Morland and Ferman Adell.

Ardis graduated from high school in Marquette, Kansas.  She graduated from North Park College in 1952 and received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Western Illinois University in 1958. She was a life-long member of the Covenant Church and started out, for many years in Galesburg, as a Parish worker. Ardis taught kindergarten there in the early 70’s and served as Director of Christian Education. She enjoyed singing in the church choir for over 50 years, served on the Diacontate Board, taught Sunday School and was the director of the Children’s Church. Ardis was also a member of the Ladies Circle at the church and loved ministering to “Shut-ins” in her later years. She worked for the Knox County Board of Elections from 1983 to 1997, and served as its executive director for the last nine years of her employment there. Ardis also enjoyed singing in the Commuity Chorus for many years.


Funeral Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Covenant Church. Rev. Thomas Ek will officiate. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday evening at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be held at a later date in Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Covenant Church. Joyce A. Hunter

Joyce A. Hunter 73, of Smithshire, IL passed away Tuesday February 24, 2015 in Roseville, IL.  She was born December 8, 1941 in Macomb, IL the daughter of Harold and Anna Mary Ross Ruble.  She married Eugene R. Hunter on March 26, 1966, he preceded her on November 10, 2010.

She is survived by two daughters Amy Hunter of FL, and Tina (Chance) Hunter of Smithshire, IL; one son Bill (Tondi) Hunter of Roseville, IL; 5 grandchildren Chad, Delaney, Kenny, Graison, and Chance, 1 great grandson Bryson Tyler; one sister Lois Marie (Jerry) Schisler of Roseville, IL.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 sister, 1 son (Kenneth), and 1 grandson (Caleb).

She graduated Roseville High School in 1960, and she attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL for two years.  She was a C.N.A. and a L.P.N. at the LaMoine Christian Nursing Home in Roseville, IL.  She was a cook at Country Fun in Biggsville, IL, and Smolers in Monmouth, IL and Tasty Grill in Roseville, IL.

A memorial service will be Monday March 2, 2015 at 6:30 pm at the Hoover Hall Funeral Home.  Visitation will be from 4:00-6:30 pm.  Cremation Rites have been accorded.  Memorials may be made to the Hospice Compasses and/or Roseville Ambulance Service.  Online condolences may be left at www.hooverhall.com.  Wise Family-Hoover Hall Funeral Home is in charge of the service.

Dr. Vernon Raymond Mannon, 88, of Galesburg, formerly of Monmouth and Peoria, died at 8:17 p.m. Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Marigold Health Care Center, Galesburg.

He was born in June 3, 1926 in Kewanee, IL the son of Arold and Myrtle (Algren) Mannon.  He was raised and educated in Wyoming, IL and Galesburg, IL.  He later attended and graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College, Indianapolis, IN in 1951.

Vernon served with the United State Navy from 1944 until 1946 as a Fire Control man Third Class. 

Vernon married Marilyn Clair Linner in Galesburg on January 28, 1950 and they raised 9 children.  He later married Evelyn Shane in Colorado on February 20,1996 and she died August 8, 2013.     

While serving in the Navy, Vernon developed Polio. His uncle was a chiropractor in Galesburg and through treatments he was cured of Polio.  This life changing event inspired Vernon go into Chiropractic as a career. Vernon was a Chiropractor practicing in Monmouth from 1951 until 1979.  He later practiced in Peoria, Bloomington and Benson, IL before retiring in 2014.  In 1951 he was named Illinois Chiropractor of the Year.   He was a member of the Monmouth Lions Club, Wilaboc boat Club in Oquawka and serviced as President of the Illinois Chiropractic Society. 

He loved boating on the Mississippi River with his family and Friends.  He enjoyed watching his many children play sports and most of all their many family gatherings.   Helping family member with improvement projects made his day.  His biggest passion was to help and heal his patients with Chiropractic and natural supplements.  He was a master mechanic of the human body. 

Survivors include his children, Kirby (Karen) Mannon of Gig Harbor, WA, Terri (Brant) Weil of Monmouth, Rick (Laura) Mannon of Gilbert, AZ, Polly Mannon of Galesburg, Patsy (Greg) Manuel of Rockford, IL, David (Lorie) Mannon of Gilbert AZ, Linda (Keith Gossling) Mannon of Monmouth, Peter (Arlene) Mannon of Chandler, AZ and Micah Mannon of North Glenn, CO; 28 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, daughter, Laurie Crandall and grandson, Nathan Weil.

Cremation has been accorded.  No calling hours or services are planned at this time.  A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Dolores M. “Dee” Underwood

Dolores M. “Dee” Underwood, 85, of Galesburg, died at 5:34 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015 in Seminary Manor.  Visitation will be 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  Funeral Mass will follow the visitation at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  Rev. Cole Richard Lee Steele

Cole Richard Lee Steele, age 20 of Rural Gilson, Illinois died at 12:40 A.M. on Sunday, February 22, 2015 in Rural Williamsfield, Illinois.

He was born on October 20, 1994 in Galesburg, Illinois the son of Lee and Stephanie Carlson Steele. He attended Knoxville High Schools, graduating in 2013.

He is survived by his parents, Lee and Stephanie Steele of Rural Gilson, Illinois; his sister, Darla (Chris Donovan) Steele and their special kids, Cade and Grace Donovan, of Knoxville, Illinois and his brother, Dirk (Lindsey) Steele and their children, Haley and Drew Steele, of Maquon, Illinois; grandparents, Carole (and the late James) Steele of Knoxville, Illinois and Richard and Diane Carlson of Altona, Illinois; his girlfriend, Cheyenne Bragg of Gilson, Illinois; best friend, Alex Mallery, Knoxville, Illinois; aunts and uncles, Melissa and Mark Hazen, Emily and Joe Nichols, Christine and Ed Johnson and special aunt and uncle, Andrea and Corey Hanson; many cousins, and friends.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Knoxville, Illinois, Knox County 4-H and the Galesburg Archery Club. He lettered all four years and was captain of the Football Team, the Fishing Team and FFA at the Knoxville High School. He avid outdoorsman, enjoying all outdoor sports, especially deer hunting, and he enjoyed participating in the Demo Derbies.

He attended Carl Sandburg Vocational Welding Program and was currently working with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 25 to receive his apprenticeship.


Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, February 29, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at the Jensen Gymnasium at the Knoxville High, Knoxville, Illinois. In honor of Cole’s memories the family encourages wearing camo or blaze orange attire if you chose. Rev. Michel D. Clark will officiate. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Jensen Gymnasium at the Knoxville High School, Knoxville, Illinois. Mary O. Standard

Mary O. Standard, 87, of Galesburg, died at 6:10 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

She was born July 10, 1927 in Plymouth, Illinois the daughter of Ernest F. and Lillian M. (Mackey) Kendall. She married Kenneth Standard on May 7, 1946 in Plymouth. He preceded her in death March 11, 1995.

She is survived by three sons, Rod Standard of Galesburg, Ron (and Chris) Standard of Monmouth, and Bob (and Jeanine) Standard of Bloomington; two daughters, Nikki (and John) Campbell of Galesburg and Penny (and Mickey) Tinder of Springfield; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Dodie Robeck; a granddaughter, Kiley Standard; two brothers; and two sisters.

Mary was a PBX Operator for Gunther Construction and Galesburg Cottage Hospital. She retired in 1990. She graduated from Plymouth High School. Mary was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, and listening to country music.

Marvin “Marty” Dale Powers Sr.

 Marvin “Marty” Dale Powers Sr., 71, of Galesburg, died at 6 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 in Heartland Health Care Center.

He was born July 14, 1943 in Avon, the son of Leonard Harvey and Hazel Marie (Morris) Powers.

He is survived by three children, Marvin “Marty” Dale (and Angie) Powers Jr. of Galesburg, Christina Tenhaaf of Galesburg, and Melissa Maynard of Decatur; two grandchildren, Andria Powers and Christopher Tenhaaf; five brothers, Alvin L. Powers of Bushnell, Everett L. (and Martha) Powers of Knoxville, Leland H. Powers of Galesburg, Eldon Powers of Ellisville, and Gregory K. (and Donna) Powers of Knoxville; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dennis Powers.

Marty was an assembler at Maytag for 30 years, retiring in 2002. He graduated from Valley High School. He enjoyed going to yard sales, fixing radios, and gardening. He was a Chicago Bears fan.

Marty served in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1967 and in the Reserves until 1969. He boxed while in the Air Force and was captain of the boxing team.

Visitation will be begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Military Honors. Richard S. Yemm

Richard S. Yemm, 89, of Galesburg, died at 3:35 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 2015 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Lois Mabel Ruddell

Lois Mabel Ruddell, age 93, of Knoxville, Illinois died at 2:33 A.M. Wednesday February 18, 2015 at OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center, Galesburg, Illinois. 
 
Lois was born on January 13, 1922 in McDonough Co., Illinois, the daughter of Fredrick and Gladys Vail McNeil. She attended and graduated from Wataga High School, Wataga, Illinois. She married Claude H. Ruddell on September 24, 1942 in San Francisco, California and he preceded her in death on March 16, 1996. 
 
She is survived by her two sons, Stephen Ruddell of Inverness, Florida and John Ruddell of rural Knoxville, Illinois; five grandchildren, Misty Ruddell of Galesburg, Illinois, Stephen Ruddell, Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska, Stephanie (Rick) VanWinkle of Memphis, Tennessee, Mark Ruddell of Hope Sound, Florida, and Sachiko Ruddell of Kansas City, Missouri; two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Freda and Leah and two brothers, Fred and Glenn.
 
She attended Western Illinois University on two occasions, receiving her teaching certificate and then her nursing certificate. During World War II she taught at the former Fosmyer School, and then worked for the Galesburg Mental Health Research Hospital for 30 years.
 
She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Galesburg, Illinois. She enjoyed fishing, sports, sewing, knitting, cooking, riding four-wheelers and spending time with her loved ones.
 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois.  Rev. Harold Berrian will officiate.   Visitation will be on Friday, February 20, 2015 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois.  Memorials may be made to the family. Raymond LeRoy “Tarzan” Longcor


Raymond LeRoy “Tarzan” Longcor, 84, of Galesburg, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Heartland Health Care, Galesburg.
He was born March 9, 1930 in Galesburg, the son of Charles L. and Jessie P. Hoots Longcor.  He married Kathy Stinson.  He later married Judy Clark.  Raymond is survived by two sons, Raymond Stinson and Timothy Longcor both of Galesburg; three daughters, Karin (Michael) Mize of Monmouth, Kelly (Gussy) Christofferson of Aberdeen, SD, and Laurali (Edward) Lape of Galesburg; three sisters, Eva (Merle) Brown of Poplar Grove, Sylvia Smith of Peoria, and Edith Mitchell of Byron; 13 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.  He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers; and 4 sisters.
He worked as a stocker in the freezer at Roger Brothers for over 30 years.  Tarzan was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Galesburg.  He recently had attended Gordon Behrent’s Senior Center.  He loved to watch old western movies.

John Zefo

John M. Zefo, 63, of Galesburg passed away at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, February 19 at the Iowa Veterans Hospital. 
 
He was born May 24, 1951 in Galesburg to John and Helen Garrison Zefo.
 
John is survived by his mother, Helen; his children, Jon R. Zefo of Galesburg, Anna Zefo of Galesburg, and Dustin (Rachel) Johnson of Galesburg; his brothers, Joseph Zefo, Nicholas Zefo, and Patrick Zefo; sisters Mary Zefo, Christy (Dean) Huffman, and Amy (JJ) Coe; his grandchildren, Johnathan, Dominique, Donovin, and Justice; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lacy Zefo as well as his father, John Zefo.
 
John proudly served his country during the Vietnam Conflict with the United States Marine Corps from August of 1968 until August of 1970. He worked primarily as a commercial roofer, and was an avid drummer and singer for his whole life. He also served as the president of the Galesburg Blues Society. He was a proud member of the NRA, and he will be remembered for the wonderfull time he spent living in Colorado for several years.
