Jane M. Cochran

Jane M. Cochran, 95, of Monmouth and formerly of Kirkwood, IL passed away at 3:15 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2017 at the Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg, IL

She was born on April 7, 1921 in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of Charles and Edith (Johnson) Menely. Jane was raised and educated in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1939. She attended Monmouth College and later Moser Business College in Chicago.

Jane married C.W. “Bill” Cochran on August 10, 1946 in Monmouth; he preceded her in death on March 9, 1981.

Jane first worked at the 1st National Bank in Monmouth as a teller; she later was a secretary at Kirkwood Elementary School, Kirkwood Veterinary Clinic, and the Kirkwood United Methodist Church. She also served as the Tompkins Township Supervisor. Jane was active in the Kirkwood United Methodist Church and served on several church committees. She was a member of the Chapter T P.E.O. and Order of the Eastern Star. Jane enjoyed sewing, reading, and was a member of the “Go Go Girls”.

Surviving Jane are her daughters; Jan Johnson of Easton, PA, Cathy (Don) Daily of Monmouth, Karen (Barry) Logan of Metamora, IL, her grandchildren; Jason Logan of Spring Bay, IL, Georgia (Joel) McMillan of Okinawa, Japan, Brent Daily & Lindsey of Springfield, IL, Chris (Amber) Daily of Kansas City, MO, Marika Johnson of Atlanta, GA., and ten great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers; Bob Menely, Harold Menely, and Bill Menely.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 3, 2017 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory. A private family interment will be in Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood, IL. Charles Rollin Head II

Berwick – Charles Rollin Head II, 88, devoted husband of Mary Joan Ray Head died peacefully, January 29, 2017.

Charles loved the Lord, Joan and his family:  He is Papa to Laura Shearer Head Powell (Jay), Jennifer Johnson Head Mabry, Charles Malcolm Head (Susan), Sarah Bartlett Head Stambaugh (Joe), Jane Milne Head Shimkus (Randy).  He was preceded in death by his infant son, Matthew Ray Head.

His 16 grandchildren lit up his life and gave him the greatest joy.  Rollin Dean Head (Sasha), Alexander Reed Head (Lena), Caitlin Head Powell, Ralph Jacob Powell IV, Charles Anthony Powell, Brittany Anne Powell, Laurel Grace Mabry Poff (Jim), Heather Katherine Mabry, Sarah Elizabeth Mabry, Solomon Harrison Mabry, Moriah Alexandra Mabry, Hunter Milne Mabry, William Ervin Stambaugh, Olivia Esther Shimkus, Malcolm Austin James Shimkus, Mason Scott Shimkus.  Raegan Marie Head (Rollin & Sasha) is the first great grandchild that tickled Charles beyond words.

Charles was the cherished son of Dr. Jerome Reed Head and Jean Milne Head.  He grew up in Evanston, Illinois with his full of life and adventurous brothers; Louis, James, Jerome, Steve and Henry.  

Charles graduated Amherst College after a college career that included his Xi Psi fraternity, football and a hard earned history degree.  Charles was a veteran of the Korean War.

He began his farming career in Boiling Brook, Illinois.  The neighboring farmers took him under their wing when they saw his love for using his hands in the soil and being his own boss.

Charles met the love of his life, a peppy physical education teacher, Joan Ray, in Amboy, Illinois, and the next 61 years were one for the ages.  They spent the first 6 years of their marriage in a log cabin that Charles, his brothers and the Gunderson cousins built.

Charles, Joan and their first three children moved to Berwick, Illinois, in 1963 where they established Head Acres.

Charles had a servant's heart.  He was an active member of the Abingdon Christian Church.  He served as Sunday School Teacher, Elder and Strong Bass Vocalist in the choir.  Charles was privileged to serve the church through praying and preparing Dial A Devotion.  He was a founding member of the Abingdon Lay Council.  Additional accomplishments and service were dedicated to the Abingdon Rotary Club, the Willing Workers 4-H Club, the Abingdon School Board, being a substitute teacher and member of the Warren County Farm Bureau.

Charles did not miss his Monday afternoon bridge games or any meal that ended with pie, paired with ice cream or covered in cool whip.   He was known to strike up a competitive game of Solitaire, Ghost and of course Spoons.

Charles will be terribly missed by his family and friends while his many accomplishments, his pony tail (began at age 80) and his legacy of reciting cherished poems will last for generations.

Charles Rollin Head II will be celebrated on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at the Abingdon Christian Church, 409 S. Main, Abingdon.  Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at 11.  Rev. Darryl McDaniel will officiate.  Burial at the Berwick Cemetery with military rites will follow the service and all are welcome to join the family for lunch back at the Abingdon Christian Church.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Howard Payne Mower

Howard Payne Mower, 73, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 3:00 pm Sunday, January 29, 2017 in Marigold Nursing Home.

He was born August 11, 1943 in rural McDonough County, Illinois the son of Howard E. and Mary Payne Mower. He married Susan Elam.

Howard is survived by his children, Mark P. Mower of Franklin, North Carolina and Amy Mower (Luther Brookshire) Thedy of Otto, North Carolina; his sister, Ellen Mower Spittell (John) of Galesburg; two grandchildren, Tyler B. Rentz and Amy Kathleen (Max) Newman and two great grandchildren, Sean and Claire Newman all of Conyers, Georgia. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Howard served in the US Army Reserves.

He was a salesman, buyer, warehouse manager and was a partner at Distillers and Brewers Sales. He loved to farm and had a variety of animals, zebras, llamas, buffalos and horses. Howard was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He graduated from Corpus Christi Catholic School in 1961 and St. Ambrose College in 1965. Howard had a great sense of humor and had a great interest in Native American Indians.

Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 am Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Rev. William Miller will officiate. Visitation will be 4:00-6:00 pm Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Prayers will be at 6:00pm Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Grant Thompson “Tom” Bullis

Grant Thompson “Tom” Bullis, 90, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 4:59 a.m. Thursday, January 26, 2017 at his home.

He was born April 6, 1926, in Galesburg, the son of Grant Leon and Ramona Jeannette (Thompson) Bullis. He married Katherine “Gail” Cederoth on April 29, 1950 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on May 6, 2016.

Tom is survived by two sons, Grant Marcus “Marc” (Barb) Bullis of Plymouth, Minnesota and Jay Andrew (Kim Wakefield) Bullis of Galesburg; two daughters, Marcia Katherine (Eric Berg) Bullis and Nancy Jeannette (Amos) Blevins, both of Galesburg; five grandchildren, Kate Bullis of Indiana, Justin (Liz) Bullis and Kara (P.J.) Hynes, both of Minnesota, Connie (Brian) Seastedt of Nebraska, and Adam (Miranda) Blevins of Indiana; seven great grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Jean Clark of Fort Collins, Colorado. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

He joined the family business, Grant Bullis Insurance Agency, in 1950. He retired in 1996. Tom owned and managed real estate properties in Galesburg. Tom graduated from Galesburg High School in 1945 and from Knox College in 1950, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. While at Knox, Tom had the opportunity to study abroad in Exeter, England. He used this as an opportunity to travel throughout Europe.

Tom served in the United States Air Force as a gunner from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. He was trained on a B-17.

Tom’s passion was long distance bike riding. His epic bike ride was during our nation’s Bicentennial in 1976, riding coast to coast, Virginia to Oregon. Tom continued riding his bicycle well into his 80s with friends and family he met along the way. He was sure to buy bicycles for all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, always at locally owned bike shops.

Tom had the ability to find a friend in everyone. He regaled stories at coffee shops around Galesburg and across the United States. Tom enjoyed reading history books and was a treasure chest of Galesburg history. He was very compassionate and considerate to all.

His children are deeply grateful to have been this man’s children. He taught them to love and care for all people. Tom was a child at heart, taking his children sledding, skiing, and camping.
Tom was a longtime member of Central Congregational Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher.

Tom was an avid blood donor for over 50 years.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Central Congregational Church. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Sterrett Collins officiating. Charles F. Anderson


Charles F. Anderson, 92, of Alexis and resident of Courtyard Estates in Monmouth passed away at 5:13 A.M. on January, 25 2017 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL.

He was born June 5th, 1924 on his grandfather's farm northwest of Little York, Warren County. Charles was the youngest and last survivor of three sons born to Scotch-Irish parents, Charles Frederick and Edna May Seaton Anderson. He attended Brownlee District #19, a one room country schoolhouse, and graduated from Little York Community High School in 1942. After enrolling at Iowa State University (ISU) for one term, he was drafted into the US Army Signal Corps. on March 4th, 1943. He spent most of his military service in England, Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. He was discharged December 20th, 1945 with honors at Camp Grant, IL.

Thereafter, he returned to college at ISU in March, 1946 and became very active in the Delta Chi Fraternity. He served as Vice President, President, Selected Chapter Luminary and was a member of the interfraternity council. Charles was chosen to represent all ISU fraternities as a National Interfraternity Conference delegate in NYC. He also was Secretary Treasurer of the Ag EC Club. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology in March, 1949.

After graduation, he and his brother Robert proudly worked together on the Anderson farm. They were the 5th generation in over 150 years to farm land in the Ohio Grove Township area. They welcomed his nephews, Moses in 1982, Matthew in 1987, and later his great nephew Cyrus in 2005 to continue the Anderson Farm legacy. As early adopters of no-till farming practices, they were selected as conservation farm of the year in 1991 by the Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation District. Charles continued working on the farm until he was 85 years old.

On its 100th anniversary celebration on July 4th, 1935, Charles joined the Cedar Creek United Presbyterian Church northeast of Little York. He was the 5th generation of his family to join; and served faithfully as Chairman of the Congregation, Church Treasurer and member of the building committee. Sadly, the church was closed and demolished in 1962.

Outside of work on the farm and church, Charles was very active in his community. He served on the Board of Directors for the First State Bank of Little York, Monmouth Trust and Savings as well as Marquette Bank of Monmouth for a total of 21 years. He was president of the Cedar Creek Cemetery Association for 25 years. He was a real-estate broker for 38 years. Charles remained a life member of Alexis Post 189 American Legion & Monmouth Post 2301 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also remained an active fraternity member of the ELKs #397 and #894 for a total of 71 years. The FFA chapter of Alexis made him an honorary member in 2000. He was also an ISU Alumni Association Member and member of several agriculture related organizations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother in 1920 and his brother Robert in 1997. Charles was elated to know his name would be carried on with his great great nephew Roman Charles Urbanczyk. Survived by: a cousin, Jean Ann (Jeff) Stafford of Shreveport, LA; two nephews, Moses (Roberta) Anderson of Alexis, IL and Matthew (Darlene) Anderson of Galesburg, IL; two great nephews, Cyrus (Heather) Anderson and Blake Anderson of Alexis, IL; two great nieces, Cierra (Steve) Urbanczyk of New Lenox, IL and Lindsey Anderson of Chicago, IL; Numerous step nieces and nephews: Stan (Lynn) Stripe of Milton, FL; Sherry Glas of Galesburg, IL; Jerry (Kathy) Stripe of Zephyrhills, FL; and Harry (Theresa) Stripe of Flower Mound, TX.

A Celebration of Life will be at 3:00 P.M, Saturday, February 4, 2017, at the Monmouth American Legion. Immediate family and very close friends of Charles will be privately invited to an interment of his ashes at the Cedar Creek Cemetery of Little York. The ceremony will include full military honors by the Alexis American Legion Post 0189 and Monmouth Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2301. Friend of the family, Pastor Sue Shike of Sunbeam United Presbyterian Church will officiate the service. The family gratefully declines flowers and donations. They will gladly accept your prayers, condolences and fond memories of Charles. Donna L. Jones Davis

Donna L. Jones Davis, 84, of Galesburg, died at 5:26 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2017 at home.
Donna was born August 26, 1932 in Peoria, the daughter of Benjamin H. and Malina E. Edwards Binegar. She married Sgt. Paul E. Jones on January 13, 1950 in Peoria. She later married Robert L. Davis. Donna is survived by one son, Donald (Pamela) Jones of Kirkwood; two daughters, Donna Barker-Tripp of Galesburg and Carol Jones of Monmouth; her daughter-in-law and companion, Rhonda Jones of Galesburg; one sister, Shirley Jacobson of Arkansas; 20 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one son, H. Paul Jones; one daughter, Theresa Goudy; one grandson, Calvin Cook; one brother; and one sister.
Donna was a home health caretaker for many years and was of the Methodist faith.

Thomas P. Campbell “Mr. Tom"

Thomas P. Campbell Mr. Tom, 90, of Henderson, Illinois died at 10:40 A.M. on Monday, January 23, 2017 at O.S.F. St. Marys Medical Center, Galesburg, Illinois. 
 
Thomas was born February 6, 1926 in Bronx, New York, the son of Thomas and Mary (McGuire) Campbell. He married Rebecca D. Dennis on December 17, 1949 in Vallejo, California.  She preceded him in death on July 12, 2011. 
 
Thomas served in both World War II and the Korean War.  He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1963 and then went on to work at Admiral Corporation in Bloomington in retiring 1990.  
 
Thomas is survived by one son, John Campbell of Henderson, Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews; and one special niece and nephew, Lisa and Mike Alderson of Henderson, Illinois.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers, and one sister.   
 
Graveside memorial service will be held at 12:00P.M. on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Henderson Cemetery, Henderson, Illinois. Susan Marie Paul

Susan Marie Paul, 54, of Monmouth, Illinois died at 9:24 pm Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

She was born March 5, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Clark Raymond and Joan Cleofa Lesniewski DeRudder. She married Jay Paul in Canton, Illinois. They later divorced.

She is survived by her special friend of over 20 years, Kenny Sullivan of Macomb, Illinois; two daughters, Elizabeth (Nick) Kluever of Monmouth and Melissa Jones of Avon, Illinois; her brother, Raymond C. DeRudder of Bushnell, Illinois; two sisters, Ruth A. Smith of Abingdon, Illinois and Joan C. (Victor) Eckstein of Elgin, Illinois; her granddaughter, Lauren Kluever and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, a son, Jay Daniel Paul, Jr. in 1992 and her brother, Joseph M. DeRudder.

Her true joy was spending time with her granddaughter, Lauren. Susan was a homemaker and caregiver for her mother and her brother. She enjoyed her scratch off bingo card and going to the casino boat and watching Law and Order SVU.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00pm Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. James Ecklund will officiate. Patricia Holsinger

Patricia Holsinger, 82, of Monmouth, passed away at 12:35 p.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.

She was born October 2, 1934 in Ponemah, IL, the daughter of Clinton Charles and Marguerite Elnora (Smith) Shamblin. She was raised and educated in Kirkwood, graduating from Kirkwood High School in 1953.

Patricia married Jack Stotler on December 25, 1954.  She later married Willard Holsinger on January 1, 1978 and he passed away on May 8, 2000.

Patricia worked at the County Farm, the Warren County Nursing Home and Monmouth Hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant.  Following her retirement she was a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her grandkids.

She loved to watch wrestling and making quilts for her grandchildren.  She enjoyed fishing, playing bingo, cooking holiday dinners and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her 9 children, Beverly (Rodney) Teel of Monmouth, Mary Chambers of Monmouth, Robert (Kathleen) Stotler of Monmouth, David Stotler of Arkansas, Debbie (Rex) Mettler of Monmouth, Joseph Stotler of Monmouth, Paula (Kevin) Mackey of Oquawka, Sandy DeWeese of Macomb and Willie Holsinger of Monmouth; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Dale Shamblin of Monmouth, Charles Shamblin and Len Shamblin both of Galesburg; 1 sister, June (Noel) Grabowski of Galesburg; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 sons, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

Graveside committal services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Silent Home Cemetery, Cameron. Richmon S. Purl


Richmon S. Purl, 85 of Galesburg, passed away at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the Marigold Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Galesburg. 
  He was born September 28, 1931 in Randolph County, Arkansas, the son of John W. and Elvina Bell Rankin Purl.  He married JoAnne R. Krebs on May 17, 1954 in Galesburg.
  Richmon is survived by his former spouse and mother of his children, JoAnne R. Purl of Galesburg; his children, Stephen M. (Donna) Purl of Princeton, Timothy E. (Julie) Purl of Galesburg, Douglas E. Purl of Wataga and Jo Ella C. “Lisa” (Dave) Bernhart of Galesburg; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; his special friend, Mary Schwab; and several nieces, nephews and their families.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Wesley and Carter and his sisters, Catherine, Margaret, Ebbie and Velma.
  His family moved from Arkansas to Avon in 1942.  He was drafted into the Army in 1951 and served two years and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, Camp Kilmer in New Jersey and he was also stationed in Frankfort, Germany during the Korean War.  He had also lived in Abingdon, at Lake Bracken and in Galesburg.  He worked over 40 years at Admiral/Maytag retiring on September 1, 1992.  While working, he decided he wanted to earn his high school diploma equivalent GED and he was awarded it in 1982.  He served as Lake Patrol at Lake Bracken for several years.  He was a member of the East Galesburg Community Chapel and the Galesburg American Legion Post #285.  He enjoyed playing his guitar, hunting, fishing, playing billiards with family and friends, and going to the boats.  He also enjoyed rendezvous camping in several states and he was delighted to see the Cubs win a World Series.  He never met a stranger and was always delighted to engage in conversation or play music with anyone.  He was very proud to go on the Honor Flight to Washington this past October.
  His family would like to express a special thank you to OSF Hospice, nurse Kayla and aid Amy, and to everyone at Marigold for all their love, care and attention shown to Richmon.

Norma Mae Helen Peterson Morss

Norma Mae Helen Peterson Morss, age 82 of Galesburg, Illinois died at 2:15 P.M. on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.

Norma was born on February 10, 1934 in Galesburg, Illinois the daughter of Everett and Madge Johnson Peterson. She married Harold Morss on September 16, 1951 at Maxey Chapel in rural Knoxville, Illinois.

Surviving is her husband, Harold Morss of Galesburg, Illinois; her children: Tim (Hope) Morss of Watertown, Tennessee, Christine Morss of Ormond Beach, Florida, and Rod Morss of Galesburg, Illinois; Fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. She has two sisters: Marlene (Bill) Broadfield of Havana, Florida and Janet Palm of Altona, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Norma was a member of the East Galesburg Community Church. She worked as an Office Manager for her husband, at his business HDM Agri Sales in Galesburg, Illinois. She enjoyed her family and grandkids.

Benjamin “Ben” M. Lee

Benjamin “Ben” M. Lee, 91, of Monmouth, IL died at 2:03 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at the Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg.

He was born October 19, 1925 in Point Pleasant Township, Warren County, the son of Max and Pearl (Miller) Lee.  Ben was raised and educated in Roseville and graduated from Roseville High School in 1942. 

Ben served with the United States Army Air Corps toward the end of World War II, achieving the rank of Sergeant.

He married Carolyn E. Merion on November 20, 1949 in Monmouth and she passed away on April 2, 2010.  After marriage, they lived in Roseville for 40 years where they were members of the Roseville United Methodist Church.

Ben farmed his entire life in the Roseville area, retiring in 1991, at which time they moved to Monmouth.  He was an avid sportsman; he loved to play golf, an avid Chicago Cubs fan, and a great bowler and billiards player.  He was a member of Monmouth County Club and Gibson Woods.  Ben was a member of the Monmouth American Legion and participated in the Honor Flight in May of 2015. 

Survivors include his children, Jeff M. (Tess) Lee of Temecula, CA, Linda S. (Steve) Grupenhagen of Burke, VA and Jim R. (Linda) Lee of Monmouth; his grandchildren; Jesse (Paige) Lee, Marye Lee, Shae (Adam) Mitchell, Amy Grupenhagen, Matt Geer, Katy (Ian) Geer and great grandchildren; A.J. Mitchell, Andrew & Emily Gunn.  Also surviving is one sister, Martha (Howard) Nelson of California, and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one sister Betty Kitchell.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 27, 2017 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Interment will be in Roseville Cemetery. Donald W. Fritz

Donald W. Fritz, 89, of Knoxville, Illinois died at 12:30 pm Monday, January 23, 2017 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2017 at the Covenant Church with Rev. Tom Ek and Rickord Brian “Ric” Fritz officiating. 
The family will receive friends at a luncheon at the Church following the service.  Memorials may be made to the Pipe Organ Fund at the Covenant Church.  Cremation will be accorded.

Rosemary J. Retter

Rosemary J. Retter, 69, of Galesburg, died at 11:28 p.m. Monday, January 23, 2017 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

She was born August 22, 1947, in Galesburg, the daughter of Wanda Jean (Miller) Fitzsimmons. She married Clarence A. Retter December 14, 1967 in Urbana.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Clarence; three sons, Michael Patrick (Tina) Retter of San Antonio, Texas and Shawn Lee (Lisa) Retter and Curtis Allen (Sara) Retter, both of Galesburg; seven grandchildren, Marina, Tylor, Paige, Katie, Carson, McKenzie, and Elijah; three sisters, Shirley Dietrich of Peoria, Sandra Titus of Galesburg, and Kathy Raines of Quincy; and two brothers, Bill Shepherd of Oklahoma and David Fitzsimmons of New York. She was preceded in death by her mother.

Rosemary was a cook and dietician for many years. Locally, she had worked at Seminary Manor, Heartland Health Care Center, and retired from Perkins. She graduated from Urbana High School in 1967 and attended beauty school. She was of the Methodist faith. Rosemary enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She loved crafting with her grandchildren and she loved animals.

Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2017 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Richard Dale Derry

Richard Dale Derry, 74 of Galesburg, passed away at 4:24 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2017 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
  He was born December 21, 1942 in Galesburg, the son of Ivan Dale “Sandy” and Lois M. Anno Derry.  He married Erma Sebree Wade on November 1, 1981 in Abingdon.
  Richard is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Erma; a daughter, Ann Hare of Pahrump, Nevada; a stepson, Tim Wade of Abingdon; a stepdaughter, Trisha Wade of Galva; four grandchildren, Brian, Lora, Amber and Alan; a step-grandson who he helped raise, Travis; two great-granddaughters; a sister, Joyce (Jack) DeWeese of Galesburg; a special friend, Jim Dunn of Galesburg; and his dog, Ginger.
  He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Martha Deppe.
  He grew up in Berwick and attended Roseville schools.  He worked construction in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area and later worked at OMC in Galesburg.  He also worked as a machinist at the Parts House and Midas Muffler retiring in 2013.  He attended the Berwick Baptist Church.  He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.  He liked NASCAR and was a Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fan.  He raced go carts and enjoyed bowling in his earlier years.  He also attended area car shows and his step-grandson Travis’s football games.  He enjoyed his many friendships and spending time with family.
  Cremation will be accorded.  A time to celebrate Richard’s life and share with his family will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Abingdon American Legion Post #381.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Lynda J. Thomas

Lynda J. Thomas, 71, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 5:30P.M. on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, Illinois.

Dorothy M. "Dottie" Hutchisson

Dorothy M. "Dottie" Hutchisson, age 96, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 9:40 pm on January 21, 2017 at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, Illinois. Dorothy was born on December 18, 1920 in Smithshire, Illinois and is the daughter of Edward D. and Marie A. Anderson Gibb. Dottie was raised in rural Warren County where she attended Maple Grove Elementary and later graduated from Kirkwood High School. She was married to Samuel J. Hutchisson on August 10, 1940 in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 9, 2007. Dottie spent most of her working life in the Retail and Fashion Business. She was employed at Brown Lynch, and Scott and Bowman Colwells, both in Monmouth, Illinois and then at Klines. She lastly owned and operated "Dotties Corner" in Monmouth for many years. She was a former member and president of the Monmouth Business Women Professionals, and also won the Businesswoman of the Year award. She is an active member of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, the Home Economics Club, and Monmouth Women's Club.
She is survived by her sister, Thelma (Wayne) "Bunky" Scott of Monmouth, Illinois and her brother, R. Keith Gibb of STronghurst, Illinois. There is one grandson, Brad (Alice) Peck and great grandson, Brandt Peck, all in Salt Lake City, Utah. There are a number of nieces and nephews also surviving and one great nephew Tanner in Tampa, Florida. She is preceded in her death by her parents, husband, one daughter, Linda Hutchisson Peck, and a grandson Brent Peck. Four other brothers have preceded her in death. A funeral service will be at Faith United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth on Friday January 27, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Interment will be in the Ellison Cemetery near Smithshire, Illinois. Her family plans visitation and will receive their friends at Faith United Presbyterian Church on Friday from Noon to 2:00 pm prior to the service. Sheila J. Danforth

Sheila J. Danforth, age 81, of Cameron, Illinois; passed away at 7:35 pm on January 21, 2017 at the Monmouth Nursing Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Sheila was born on July 26, 1935 in Monmouth, Illinois and is the daughter of Charles C. and Iva May Hubbard Boyd. She attended local schools in Galesburg, and graduated from the Galesburg High School with the class of 1953. She then graduated from the Burlington School of Nursing in 1956. Sheila then married Ronnie J. "Dan" Danforth on January 26, 1958 in Cameron, Illinois. He preceded her in death on August 30, 1985. Sheila worked as a Registered Nurse at Monmouth Hospital from 1956 to 1959. She then stayed at home and raised her three children from 1959 to 1976. Sheila returned to nursing at Applegate Inn Nursing Home of Monmouth and later at Pinewood Health Care Center from 1976 until her retirement in June of 1995. She was a very involved parent with the former Warren High School as she served as treasurer of the Warren P.T.C. and was also a member of the Warren Sports Boosters. As a life long member of the Cameron Christian Church she was active in the Chi Rho youth group and also helped with Vacation Bible School. Sheila enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren's extra-curricular activities. She has always enjoyed the outdoors, from camping with the family at Young's Lake in Kirkwood to caring for her garden and flowers at home in Cameron. She also enjoyed traveling on many of her trips including her close friends. Sheila is survived by one son, David B. Danforth of Elk Grove, Illinois, and two daughters, Julia M. Carlson of Cameron, Illinois, and Paula (Anthony) Bowling of Cameron, Illinois. There are four grandchildren, Megan (Alan) Carlson of Cameron, Illinois, Chad (Amanda) Carlson of Nuevo, California, Sheila Bowling and Danielle Bowling, of Cameron, Illinois. There is one great grandchild, Luke Carlson of Nuevo, California. She has one brother surviving, Clyde Boyd of Galesburg, Illinois and her sister in law Shirley and Robert Dennison of Monmouth, Illinois. She is preceded in her death by her parents, husband Ronnie, and their daughter, Carol Ann Danforth.
 
A funeral service will be on at 10:00 am Friday, January 27,2016 at Cameron Christian Church in Cameron, Illinois. Her family plans visitation at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth on Thursday, January 26,2017 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Interment will be in Silent Home Cemetery in Cameron, Illinois. Constance “Connie” L. Leath

Constance “Connie” L. Leath, 71 of Galesburg, IL, died at 4:24 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

Connie was born June 7, 1945 in Monmouth, IL the daughter of James Everett and Vurgil Ruth (Shaffer) Leath.  She was raised and educated in Cameron, IL, graduating from Warren High School in 1963.

Connie married Robert Derry and they were later divorced.

She worked several jobs but most recently was the manager at Midwest Title Loans in Galesburg.

Connie loved spending time with her family and being at home but also enjoyed traveling.  She was a member of the Galesburg Elks Lodge #894 and the Cameron Christian Church.

Survivors include her children, Rob (Julie) Derry of Monmouth and Toby (Kim) Derry of Katy, TX; grandchildren, Matthew (Amanda) Derry of Springfield, IL, Kayleigh Derry of Lake in the Hills, IL, Megan Derry and Mitchell Derry both of Katy, TX; great granddaughter, Emma Lynn Derry of Springfield, IL; Significant other, Al Urena of Galesburg; sisters, Barbara Mackey of Cameron and Margie Borcky of Monmouth; brothers, Jim (Edna) Leath of Cameron, Dean Leath of Monmouth, Fred Leath of Monmouth and Gilbert Leath of Galesburg; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 sisters, Wilma Jean Leath, Lucille Walker, Mary Kenney and Nancy Johnson; and 2 brothers, Delbert Leath and Charles Leath.

Graveside committal services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Silent Home Cemetery, Cameron, IL.  Cremation has been accorded.  Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the OSF Family House in Peoria, IL. Larry L. Sims

Larry L. Sims, 71, of Alexis, passed away at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Marigold Rehab and Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL.
He was born on July 7, 1945 in Moline, IL, the son of Donald “Raymond” and Helen (Carlson) Sims.  He was raised and educated in North Henderson, and graduated from Alexis High School in 1963. 
Larry married Paula Fleck on October 12, 1984 in Aledo, IL, she survives.
Larry farmed all his life in the Alexis area, he loved farming and anything to do with nature.  He loved John Deere tractors, and collected John Deere farm toys.  Most of all, Larry loved to spend time with his family.  He was a member of Alexis United Presbyterian Church. 
Surviving Larry is his wife, Paula Sims of Alexis, Three children; Ann (Art) Rousseau of Morgantown, WV, Brent (Dianna) Sims of Galesburg, Dayna (Andrew) Leichty of Little York, IL; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  Also surviving is his mother Helen Sims of North Henderson, IL; one sister, Brenda (Dave) Fell of Galesburg, two brothers; Gary (Nancy) Sims of Alexis, Gene (Patty) Sims of Alexis, and numerous nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Sims.

Patricia E. Walker

Patricia E. Walker, 78, of Knoxville, Illinois died at 2:48 P.M. on Friday, January 20, 2017 at her home in Knoxville, Illinois.

Patricia was born on October 22, 1938 in Williamsfield, Illinois, the daughter of Roland and Evelyn Savage LaFollette. She attended and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1956. Patricia married Frank E. Walker on May 10, 1958 in Galesburg, Illinois. Frank and Patricia were Knoxville High School King and Queen.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Frank E. Walker; her children, Monte Eugene (Delores) Walker of Dunlap, Illinois and Mark Edward Walker of Lewisville, Texas; three grandchildren, Casey Walker, Peter Walker and Monique (Jason) Masters; two great-great grandchildren, Brooke and Jackson Masters; and one sister, Marjorie (Ron) Cottom of Wataga, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents.
