Joan L. Mattson

Joan L. Mattson, 90, a native of Galesburg, died 4:53 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at the Care Center of Abingdon, Abingdon.
Born November 15, 1925, Joan attended Saint Joseph Academy and graduated in 1943.  She spent her later years working for F&M Bank, accumulating over 40 years of experience, and retiring in the 80’s.  While with the bank, she was appointed Head Cashier, and held that position until her retirement.
Her hobbies included a great love of music. She learned to play the piano and pipe organ in grade school, and continued playing throughout her entire life.  She voluntarily served her community with her talents, by offering to play for various occasions, and provided organ accompaniments during masses for Corpus Christi Catholic Church, for many years.  Joan was also a collector of angel figurines.  She enjoyed traveling with family and friends all of her life, and visited many places, domestically, as well as internationally, including Hawaii, Alaska, Europe and Asia, just to name a few.  Alongside her mother, Eula Mattson, Joan mastered the art of china painting, resulting in multiple, beautiful pieces and place settings, all of which will be cherished by her remaining family members and friends.
Joan was a member of the Pilot Club of Galesburg, part of the International organization for over 50 years, serving as president in 1972 and as Treasurer in past years.  She was also involved as a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters, and the Ladies of Mary, affiliated with the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Joan was preceded in death by her father, Louis F. Mattson, her mother, Eula E. Mattson, and brother, Robert L. “Skip” Mattson.
Joan is survived by Douglas R. Mattson (Nephew), Bradley R. Mattson (Nephew), and Kristin K. Mattson-Brandon (Niece), Griffin R. Mattson, Jaclyn R. Mattson, Jacob R. Brandon and Ian R. Brandon, ( All Great Nieces and Nephews).
Visitation will be 12 to 1 p.m. Monday, February 1, 2016 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  Funeral Mass will follow at 1 p.m.  Rev. Msgr. Fern Robbins

Fern Robbins, 105, of Galesburg, formerly of Victoria, Illinois died at 11:25 A.M. on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg, Illinois. 

Fern was born on December 29, 1910 in Conway, Iowa, the daughter of Claire Milton and Maude Iowa (Huogh) Norton.  She attended grade school in Butler, Missouri and graduated from Galesburg High School, Galesburg, Illinois.  She married Howard Irwin “Cappy” Robbins on June 8, 1938 in Davenport, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on March 16, 1989.

Fern is survived by one son, Phillip I. (Anne) Robbins of Victoria, Illinois; one daughter, Ann Catherine (Debbs) Ohl of Trego Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren, and 19 Great Grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, Russell Hugh Norton. 

Fern was a hairdresser in her home for many years.  She also was a farmwife.  She was a member of the Victoria United Methodist Church in Victoria, Illinois. 

Cremation rites will be accorded. A graveside memorial service will be held at later date at the Victoria Cemetery, Victoria, Illinois. Evelyn J. Ewing

Evelyn J. Ewing, age 61, of rural Roseville, Illinois, passed away at 11:10 am on January 26, 2016 at her rural residence. Evelyn was born on May 19, 1954 in Kansas and is the daughter of Porter and Dorothy Jane Hall White. She was raised in Claycomo, Missouri where she attended schools and graduated from Winnatonka High School with the class of 1972. She first married Richard W. Brannon, Sr. and was later married to Steven L. Ewing on April 19, 1997 in Monmouth, Illinois and he is surviving. Evelyn is an over-the-road trucker and began work with Munson Transportation in Monmouth, Illinois. She then drove for Wenger Truck Lines and then for VanEerden Trucking in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Lastly she drove for EverFresh Transportation in Grand Rapids where she currently was employed. Evelyn loved to go fishing and loved to shop. She is a member of the Raritan Baptist Church and her family and grandchildren were her main interest. Surviving is her husband Steven Ewing of Roseville, IL, two daughters, Victoria Brannon of Good Hope, IL. and Angelique Ewing of Kansas City, MO, two sons, Porter Brannon of Kansas City, MO, and Richard Brannon, Jr. (Tabitha) in Florida. There are twenty-two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren surviving. Also surviving are five extended daughters; Amy Wallace of Monmouth, IL, Jamie Umphres of Kirkwood, IL, Melissa Peterson of Billings, MT, Misty Bowman of Galesburg, IL, and Jen Klingler in Missouri. She is preceded in her death by her parents.
A funeral service is planned on February 6, 2016 at 11:00 am at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Cremation is then to be accorded. Her family plans visitation and will receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home from 9:00 to 11:00 am prior to the service on Saturday. A memorial fund is being established for either the Disabled American Veterans or the Buddy Program of the American Legion. H. Bruce Bricker

H. Bruce Bricker age 98 of rural Bushnell, IL passed away peacefully on Wednesday January 27, 2016 at Wesley Village in Macomb, IL.  Bruce was born on August 26, 1917 in rural Prairie City, IL to Charles and Signa Doderlein Bricker.  He married Mary Harriet Pinckley on February 24, 1940 in Bushnell, IL and she preceded him in death on July 12, 2012.  Bruce is survived by 1 Daughter – Marjorie (Richard) Schaefer of Peoria, IL, 1 Brother – Vern (Pat) Bricker of Avon, IL, 4 Grandchildren - David Schaefer of Olathe, KS, Philip (Melissa) Schaefer of Brentwood, TN, Elizabeth Schaefer of Navarree, FL and Melissa (Jeffrey) Malson of Brimfield, IL and 4 Great-Grandchildren.  He was also preceded in death by his Parents and 5 Brothers.
Bruce was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs.  He patiently waited for them to win the World Series but he could wait no longer.  He will cheer them on with his heavenly Father and all who went ahead.  Bruce graduated from Bushnell High School in 1935.  He then attended Western Illinois University, graduating in 1939.  While there he played on the football team, was injured, thus ending his football career.  He also had the distinction of being elected the first Homecoming King there.  The school honored him by asking him to reign as Grand Marshall of the Homecoming Parade in 2011.  Bruce began farming in 1940 south of Bushnell and continued there for 76 years.  He became interested in breeding Angus cattle and soon founded the Bricker Angus farm and one of the premier Angus breeding herds in the country.  He was very active in the Lamoine Valley Angus Association and helped found it in 1946.  He was a past President and Sales Manager of the local association and of the State of Illinois Angus Association as well.  Bruce was also the first working farmer to be elected to the National Board of Directors of the Aberdeen Angus Assoc.  He was a 4-H leader and was influential in whatever endeavor he tried. 
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday February 1, 2016 at the Martin-Hollis Funeral Home in Bushnell, IL.  Visitation will be held from 4 – 6 P.M. on Sunday January 31, 2016 at the Funeral Home where friends may call after 2:00 P.M. on Sunday.  Burial will be in the Bushnell Cemetery.  The family requests that memorials be made to the Bushnell Rescue Squad or the Shaw Creek Golf Club in Bushnell, IL.  Please sign the guestbook or leave condolences at http://www.martinhollisfh.com

Luella Jean "Sis" Bowen


Luella Jean "Sis" Bowen, age 92 of Media, Illinois passed away at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday January 26, 2016 at her home. She was born January 19, 1924 in Kirkwood, Illinois, the daughter of Floyd A. and Gladys M. Littrel Link. On October 6, 1945, she married Frank Wendell Bowen, They later divorced.

"Sis" was a graduate of Media-Wever High School and lived in the Media area all of her life. She had worked for several years at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, IA, Sylvania Corp. In Burlington, Fisher’s Jack & Jill Food Center in Stronghurst, and owned and operated Rod’s 66 Service Station in Media. She enjoyed outings with the "Weverettes", and loved her family, friends and traveling. She was a member of the Media Community United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Patti (Steve) Bowen of Smithshire, IL, one son Rodney (Ruby) Bowen of Raritan, Il, two grandchildren, Danielle and Garrett Bowen, six great grandchildren, Ember, Lacey, William, and Lilly Bowen, Jesslyn an Skyler Sours, two great great grandsons, Aydenn and Jentry Dean, one sister, Phyllis (Chuck) Cole of Media, and one brother, Kenneth Link of Tempe, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, William, Glen, Charles, and Harvey Link, and two sisters, Laura Link and Louise Cole.

The funeral service for Luella "Sis" Bowen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday January 30, 2016 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, with Phil Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, near Media. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mary Louise Grady

Mary Louise Grady, 88, of Galesburg, passed away at 12:15 p.m. January 23, 2016 at Marigold Health Care and Rehab, Galesburg.
She was born March 16, 1927 in Galesburg, the daughter of Mark Joseph and Clara Riegel Carr.  She married Edward E. Grady on October 18, 1947 in Galesburg.  He preceded her in death on February 22, 1999.  Mary is survived by her children, Gloria (Dennis) Goss of Brookfield, WI, Dr. Kathleen (Lee) Bushman of Eagan, MN, Michael (Susan) Grady of Galesburg, Patrick (Tami) Grady of Davenport, IA, and James Grady of Galesburg.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Benjamin (Carrie) Bushman, Kelly (Rob) Mangan, Elizabeth (Brent) St. Germain, and Kerry Goss; and her great grandchildren, Scout Emery, Keetin Bushman, Dylan and Evan St. Germain, and Vincent and Cecilia Mangan.  Mary is also survived by her brother-in-law, John (Katie) Grady of LeClaire, IA, and many nieces and nephews.  Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and four sisters.
Mary attended St. Joseph’s Academy where she graduated as valedictorian in 1945.  Mary and Ed owned and operated Grady’s 2100 Club in Galesburg and Grady’s Top Brass in Abingdon for many years.  Mary was a longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  Many will remember that Mary was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. 
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg, with the rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.  Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  Rev. BETTY A. HOWARTER

Mrs. Betty A. Howarter, 84, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 3:55 am Wednesday, January 27, 2016 in Heartland Health Care Center.

She was born September 10, 1931 in Prairie City, Illinois the daughter of Ralph H. and Gayle Shields Reed. She married Dorance D. “Tug” Howarter in Knoxville, Illinois on June 17, 1950. He preceded her in death on August 9, 2004.

She is survived by her son, Kim (Nancy) A. Howarter of Elgin, Illinois; her daughter, Chris D. Hanna of Galesburg; her sister-in-law, Alberta Taylor of Galesburg; seven grandchildren, Tricia Gosch, Natalie Vorass, Matthew Howarter, Ryan Howarter, Brooke Day, Jesus Flores and Juanita Howarter and eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.

She worked as an assembler for Gale Products for 11 years. She also had worked for VNA in housekeeping for 4 years.  She was a member of the Living Light Tabernacle Church in Roseville, Illinois and the First Church of the Open Bible. She graduated from Prairie City high school in 1949.


Graveside services are scheduled for 1:30 pm Saturday January 30, 2016 in Gilson Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:00-1:00 pm Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Leroy F. Minneman

Leroy F. Minneman, age 91, formerly of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at the Heartland Manor Health Care Center in Paxton, Illinois on Monday evening January 25, 2016 at 8:50 pm. Leroy was born on September 10, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan and is the son of Leroy F. and Emma Lindstead Minneman. He was raised in Blandinsville, Illinois where he attended the Blandinsville High School and graduated with the class of 1943. During wartime he entered and served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II. Leroy married Phyllis T. Fowler on July 14, 1950 in Monmouth, Illinois and she preceded him in death in October 2013. Leroy was in sales and first worked at Bouseman's Auto Supply of Fountain Green, Illinois. He later was employed by Claremont Street Auto Sales in LaHarpe, Illinois from 1983 to 2008 when he retired. Leroy was a "workaholic" and loved his cars. He was an avid Detroit Tigers and Chicago Bulls fan. He is survived by his daughter, Betty Minneman of Champaign, Illinois. He is preceded in his death by his parents and his wife.
A funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 1, 2016 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Interment with Military Honors will be in the Monmouth Cemetery. Mrs. Sharon F. Tucker, 73, of Galesburg, Illinois died 7:30 p.m. Monday, January 25, 2016 at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.

Kyle P. Gemmell

Kyle P. Gemmell, age 26, of Biggsville, Illinois, passed away on January 24, 2016 at the University Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born on June 26, 1989 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of John P. and Debra L. (Johnson) Gemmell. Kyle attended Union High School. On October 22, 2010, he married Mariah L. Krow in Henderson County and she is surviving. Kyle proudly served his Country as a Sgt. in the United States Army Reserves. In 2012, he completed a 13 month tour in Afghanistan with the 322nd Engineer Company. He worked at C.G.B. in Gladstone for nine years. Kyle enjoyed hunting dear with his bow, fowl, and squirrel. He loved to take his children fishing. Kyle rode Harley Davidson motorcycles with his family. In his life, he most enjoyed spending time with his family. Kyle is survived by his parents, Debra L. Gemmell (Clayton Huss) and John "Pat" Gemmell (Susan Beckett), wife Mariah Gemmell, children Keira, Eli, and Kora Gemmell, two sisters, Brandy (Travis) Martin of Burlington, IA and Nicole Gemmell of Galesburg, IL, one brother, Keleb Gemmell of Biggsville, IL, grandparents Clifford and Maida Johnson, his mother-in-law Dixie Savage, brother-in-laws Dylan Eldridge and Toby Krow, and niece Evelyn Krow. He is preceded in death by his grandparents Joe and Jean Gemmell.

Meredith Anne Anno

Meredith Anne Anno, loving wife, mother, daughter, and friend, 40, of Galesburg, died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Richard Owens Hospice House in Peoria with her family by her side, after a brief illness with cancer.
Meredith was born August 22, 1975 in Peoria, the daughter of Merritt Dean and Sally JoAnne Dreves Hansen.  Meredith married the love of her life, John Edward Anno, Jr. on October 29, 2000 in Kankakee, IL.  She is survived by her husband, John of Galesburg and her three wonderful children, Robbie, Kaitlyn, and Jeremiah all of Galesburg.  She is also survived by her father, Merritt Hansen of Chebanse, IL and many friends.  Meredith’s mother, Sally preceded her in death in 2009.
Meredith was a devoted mother to her children and was always involved with any of their school activities.  She was an active member of First Church of the Nazarene in Galesburg.  Her smile and outgoing personality helped her create the many friendships she had.  Through her church work and friendships Meredith touched many lives.  In her free time, Meredith loved to write.  She had recently received her Associates Degree from Phoenix University and was working towards her Bachelors Degree.

Leroy F. Minneman

Leroy F. Minneman, age 91, formerly of Fountain Green and LaHarpe, passed away at the Heartland Manor in Paxton, Illinois on January 25, 2016.  Arrangements are pending with Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois and a full obituary notice will be in Thursday's edition.

Deloris O. Welch

Mrs. Deloris O. Welch, 77, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 9:34 am Monday, January 25, 2016 at her home.

She was born December 19, 1938 in Pilger, Nebraska the daughter of Hobart and Elaine Rees Ottum. She married Ronald J. Welch on September 20, 1958 in Lawton, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on October 18, 2003.

She is survived by her son, David (and Tammy) Welch of Topeka, Kansas; two daughters, Teresa Phillipson of Galesburg and Tana (and Dean) Espenschied of Monticello, Illinois; her daughter-in-law, Shelby Welch of Norwalk, Iowa; three brothers, Donald (and Angie) Ottum of San Diego, California, Wayne (and Deborah) Ottum of Seattle, Washington and Brad Ottum of Pennsylvania; one sister, Carol Rosedale of Reedley, California; nine grandchildren, Harrell Timmons, III, Andrea Coffman, Tobias Monzo, Danielle Phillipson, Adam TerBeek, Emily Espenschied, William Espenschied, Brady and Reagan Welch and three great grandchildren, Caleb Monzo, Selah Monzo, Grace TerBeek. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Randy and Brian Welch, one daughter, Lori Welch and a granddaughter, Sophia Welch.

Deloris served in the Women’s Army Corp from 1957-1959.

She had worked for Walmart and in the food industry for many years. She was a dedicated homemaker, loving mother and devoted grandmother.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11 am Thursday, January 28, 2016 in East Linwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Rev. Pamela Marolla will officiate. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with services.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com



Robert Lee Lewis


Robert Lee Lewis, age 83, of Mendota, Illinois, passed away at Unity Point Proctor Medical Center emergency room on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 8:08 pm. Robert was born on October 12, 1932 in Gladstone, Illinois and is the son of Leroy W. and Harriett E. (Jaeger) Lewis. Robert attended G & O High School where he graduated with the class of 1950. After high school, in 1951, Robert entered the United States Army, 82nd Airborne, Special Forces in Ft. Bragg, NC. He later attended Western Illinois University where he graduated with in degree in education in 1958. Bob married Bonnie Jean Wheetley on August 19, 1956 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She preceded him in death on January 1, 2001. Robert moved to DePue, IL where he taught primary and high school classes, coached boy's basketball, and was an active member within the community. He found his permanent home in Mendota, in 1963, teaching at Mendota Community High School for the remainder of his career in education. He taught Industrial Arts, Drivers' Education, and COE (Cooperative Occupational Education). He was always involved with his students, coaching both girls' and boy's sports and sponsoring the VICA club. He was very involved with a variety of statewide teachers of industrial arts organizations. He retired from full-time teaching at MHS in 1996. For several years after his retirement, he was a substitute teacher, doing both short-term and long-term assignments. Robert is survived by three daughters; Melanie Lewis of Florida (Wallace Rod), Sandra Murdock of Peru, IL, and Johanna (Rodney) Shipp of LaSalle, IL. He is also survived by five grandsons, two granddaughters, one great-granddaughter, and one great-grandson. Numerous nieces and nephews also are surviving. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bonnie Jean, one brother Alfred L. "Mike" Lewis, and one sister Betty Lou Allen.
A graveside memorial service with military honors is planned for 1:30 pm on Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Oquawka Cemetery. Meredith A. Anno

Meredith A. Anno, 40, of Galesburg died Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Richard Owens Hospice House, Peoria, after a short battle with cancer.

Barbara L. Manock

Barbara L. Manock age 78 of Avon, IL passed away on Saturday January 23, 2016 at Renaissance Care Center in Canton, IL.  She was born on March 31, 1937 in Canton, IL to Lloyd and Opal Behymer Helle.  She married Gale Manock in Fiatt, IL on February 27, 1960 and he preceded her in death on October 2, 1964.  Barbara is survived by 2 Sons – Timothy G. Barbara was a cook at the B-PC Elementary Schools for 30 years and she also cooked at Faith Bible Camp for close to 40 years.  She was a member of checkrow Community Church.

Charles T. Brownell

Charles T. Brownell, 57, of Monmouth, IL died at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016 at home.

He was born June 20, 1958 in McLeansboro, IL the son of Hiram W.G. Sr. and Lilla (Treasure) Brownell.  He was raised and educated in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1976.

Charlie was a chef at Cerar’s Barnstormer in Monmouth for 20    years.  He enjoyed golfing.

Survivors include his daughters, Lindsay Brownell of Monmouth  and Melissa (Michael) Moore of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Skylie, Lukas, Brenlee and Orion; his brother, Hiram (Pam) Brownell of Deer Creek, IL; sister, Treasure (Greg) Martin of Moline, IL; nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ralph E. Hall

Mr. Ralph E. Hall age 83 of East Galesburg, Ill. died Saturday January 23, 2016 at 1:50 p.m. at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born September 20, 1932 in Galesburg, Ill. the son of Wilbur and Dorothy Osgood Hall. He married Gertrude E. Brewer in Galesburg, Ill. on November 6, 1960 she preceded him in death August 26, 1986. He later married Jean B. Adams on June 23, 1991 at Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

Ralph is survived by his wife Jean, one step daughter Cheryl and Robert Chambers of Moline, Ill., two stepsons Mark Adams of Franklin, In., and Cory Ray Adams of Sumter, S.C., two cousins Francis and Edwin Straus and Fred and Jan Hall both of East Galesburg, Ill., six step grandchildren, and eight step great grandchildren.

He graduated from Galesburg High School and worked for Maytag Corporation in the paint department for 40 years retiring April 1, 1995. He served in the United States Army in the 3rd Infantry in Korea from 1953-1954 and received the Combat Infantry Badge.

Ralph was a very kind man to everyone. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, he love cats and especially his cat Trixie. Ralph and Jean enjoyed going to Wisconsin Dells for 23 straight years.


Graveside services will be 11:30 p.m. Wednesday January 27, 2016 at East Linwood Cemetery with Lewy Neal officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the American Legion and VFW Post Honor Guard. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.

Charles L. Emory

Charles L. Emory age 85 of rural Prairie City, IL passed away at 5:30 A.M. Friday January 22, 2016 at Heartland Healthcare Center in Galesburg, IL.  He was born on December 30, 1930 in rural Prairie City, IL to Fred and Edith Quigle Emory.  He married Rosalie M. Combs in Blandinsville, IL on September 24, 1949.  Charles is survived by his wife Rosalie, 3 Daughters – Deborah Maloney, Deana Jo (Donald) Dahmm of Bushnell, IL, Teresa ((Carroll Faught) Emory of Macomb, IL and 1 Son John (Cindy) Emory of Avon, IL and beloved pet, Bo.  He is also survived by 6 Grandchildren and 7 Great-Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his Parents, 1 Sister (Dorothy Hensley) and son-in-law (Steve Maloney).
Charles was a lifetime farmer and had a true passion for his farm animals; cattle, hogs, dogs and cats.  He was a member of McDonough County Farm Bureau and he was a Korean War Veteran with the 33rd Infantry Division.  Charles was also a fireman with the Prairie City Fire Department and a school bus driver for the Bushnell-Prairie City Schools.  He obtained his private pilot’s license and very much enjoyed flying.  He was a member of the Pleasant Prairie Church in Prairie City, IL. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. John Case

Mr. John Case, 88, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 12:34AM Friday, January 22, 2016 at his home.
He was born on August 8, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio to Edward Lee and Clara Catharine Firden Case.  He married Carlene Blair on January 8, 1949 in Galesburg.  She preceded him in death on December 12, 2010.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas Edwin (and Mindi Treister) Case of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and John David Case of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Lindsey Case and Alexandra Case and two great grandchildren, Cecilia Marie Colini and Dominic Colini.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters and a ½ sister.
John worked for the Dresser-Rand Corporation where he managed the European Service Operations in the petrochemical industry from 1949 to 1989. 
He served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Soangetaha Country Club, both in Galesburg.

Winifred J. “Winnie” Knox


Winifred J. “Winnie” Knox, 82, of Galesburg, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.

She was born September 27, 1933 in Monmouth, the daughter of Leonard H. and Bertha N. (Cummings) Crosier. 

Winnie married John O. Davis, Jr. in 1954, he preceded her in death.  She later married A. DuWayne Knox in 1990.  He preceded her in death in January of 2014. 

Winnie loved chocolate, playing games, watching sports and most of all, laughing and spending time with family and friends. 

Surviving her are three children; Cindy (Craig) Hisler of Marshall, MI, Steve (Marti) Davis of Anchorage, AK, and Julie (Tim) Troyer of Angola, IN.  Also surviving are two grandsons; Cory and Colt Davis of Michigan, four step grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, one sister Mary Lu Butler of Rogers, AR and one brother Bob (Sandy) Crosier of Rosville, IL, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and brother-in-law, John R. Butler.

CAROL JEAN CARLSON

Mrs. Carol Jean Carlson, 86, formerly of Knoxville, Illinois died at 2:37 pm Wednesday, January 20, 2016 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

She was born March 16, 1929 in Henry County, Illinois the daughter of Martin and Violet Peterson Johnson. She first married Boyd Carlson. She later married Kenny Carlson. He preceded her in death on January 11, 2013.

She is survived by one son, Scott Carlson of Oneida, Illinois; two daughters, Cathy (and John) Stromson of Abingdon, Illinois and Lori (and Jeff) Gardner of Knoxville, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Matt, Ty, Tarryn, Chris, John and Denise; and three great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Kent Carlson, her brother, Dale Johnson and two sisters, Ethel Buckman and Ramona Carlson.

Carol graduated from Woodhull High School. She also had farmed with Boyd for many years in the Williamsfield area. Carol worked as a cashier and hostess for the former Sheraton and Jumers Hotel for 25 years. She currently was a volunteer for Community Treasures and OSF St Mary Gift Shop. Carol was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville. She enjoyed camping, traveling and her pets.  She loved making homemade pies and jams. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed shopping and going out to lunch with her friends.


Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 pm Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Michel Clark will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:30-1:30 pm Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be in Woodhull Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the OSF St. Mary Auxiliary. Yvonne M. Spealman

Yvonne Marie Spealman, 70, of Wataga, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at home.
Yvonne was born February 2, 1945 in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of Charles Wesley and Gladys Dorothea Nadeau Fox.  Yvonne married the love of her life John R. Spealman, Jr. on November 11, 1972 in White Bear Lake, MN.  He preceded her in death on March 19, 2015.  Yvonne is survived by one son, Randy (Corrine) Dunn of Linolakes, MN; one brother, John Fox of St. Paul, MN; and two sisters, Patricia Marier of Shoreview, MN and Carletta Fox of St. Paul Park, MN.  She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Cassandra (Glenn) Yoder and Anthony John (Courtney) Dunn; four great grandchildren, Kiryn and Annie Yoder and Wesley John and Owen Dunn; and five nephews and one niece.  Along with her husband, Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents and two nephews.
Yvonne was a beautician for several years and also was an instructor at a beauty school while living in Burlington, IA.  After moving to the Galesburg area, Yvonne worked at Hy-Vee for several years prior to her retirement.  Yvonne loved her dogs, feeding birds and collecting antiques. 
Cremation rites will be accorded.  No local services are planned.  A memorial service will be at a later date in Minnesota.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  Memorials may be made in Yvonne’s memory to the Knox County Humane Society.  Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com

Marilyn J. Nyman

Marilyn J. Nyman, age 81, of Wataga, Illinois died at 12:20 A.M. on Monday, January 18, 2016 at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois. 

Marilyn was born on November 11, 1934 in Davenport, Iowa the daughter of Loren and Sara (Miller) Annis.  She was raised and educated in Monmouth, Illinois.  She married Dale Nyman on December 31, 1959 in Monmouth, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 26, 1991.

Surviving are two daughters: Tori (John) Bloomgren of Wataga, Illinois and Rhonda (Paul) Traff of Louisville, Kentucky; one son, Rodney (Stephanie) Nyman of Germany; One brother, Norman (Roseanne) Annis of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren: Travis Fisher, Colby Bloomgren, Marisa Bloomgren, Paul Traff, Jr., Lakin Traff, Kaylee Guth, Korey Nyman and Sam Nyman; one great grandson, Breaden Glass.. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Wataga, Illinois. She was a housekeeper in the area for many years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church, Wataga, Illinois.  Rev. Joseph E Morrissey

Joseph E Morrissey, 89, passed away at 6:32pm Thursday, January 14, 2016 at OSF St Mary’s hospital in Galesburg.
Joseph was born May 13th, 1926 the son of Joseph T. and Alice M. (Nolan) Morrissey. He was born, raised and lived in Galesburg all his life. Joseph married Bonnie Lankford in the mid 1950’s.  Then in 1961, he married Sally L. Mathers who proceeded him in death. Joseph had a brother, John Vincent Morrissey  (wife Jody) who proceeded him in death. He had three children; son Joseph Morrissey (wife Linda), who proceeded him in death and two surviving children, son Anthony Morrissey of Chicago, and daughter Carin Franey (husband, Robert) of Galesburg. He has six grandchildren, Nicholas Morrissey, Amanda Morrissey, Chelsea Moberg, Janayle Ahline, Jared and Joey  and two great grandchildren, Keegan and Raelynned.
He had been a resident of Rosewood Care Center for the last six years.
 Joseph worked at the Register Mail from 1948 to 1981 and during this time he was the sports editor for twenty years. He had to retire at a young age because of macular degeneration worsening his eye sight. This didn’t stop him from publishing three books — “On the Rebound,” “Sports Memories” and “The Silver Streaks Years” — all reprising columns, stories and anecdotes from his career with The Register-Mail.
He also mentored many young writers and journalists in his time and got to know many influential sports celebrities – both local and state wide.
He was a member of the Galesburg High School Athletics Hall of Fame and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
A Corpus Christi High School graduate, Morrissey attended Knox College and was a Korean War veteran.
Joseph was known for his columns about the Cubs and his kinship with them. His favorite places to hang out when he was younger was the Downtown Lounge, Cherry Street and the Moose. Joe loved sharing his stories of his adventures and misadventures of his career.  He was considered by many to be the ‘story teller of sports ‘.

Robert Louis White

Robert Louis White, 87, of Knoxville, Illinois passed away Monday, January 18, 2016 at 11:15 PM at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois.

He was born January 17, 1929 the son of Samuel Dexter and Bernice (Lindstrom) White.  After school he served his country during the Korean Conflict as an airplane mechanic for The United States Navy.  He was a longtime photographer, artist, and carpenter for the London Mills community.  He enjoyed making clocks and fixing whatever was broken, and fishing.

Robert is survived by his 2 daughters; Sandra Lee White of Galesburg, Illinois, Barbara Lynn Hourigan of Decatur, Illinois, 1 brother; Richard White of Galesburg, Illinois, 4 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a special friend of over 30 years; Marsha Fox of Galesburg, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Samuel and Bernice White, 1 sister; Donna Harding, and 1 nephew; Steven Michael Harding.

Mrs. Fern C. Pumfrey

Mrs. Fern C. Pumfrey, 94, of Galesburg, died at 2:03 a.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2016, in Seminary Manor.

She was born January 29, 1921 in Alpha, Illinois, the daughter of Marion J. and Clara N. Brown Riley.  She married Walter M. Pumfrey on September 29, 1940 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on May 19, 2010.

She is survived by her three sons, Marion A. (and Diana) Pumfrey of Larkspur, Colorado, James E. Pumfrey of Papillion, Nebraska, and Walter M. (and Lillian) Pumfrey Jr. of Herculaneum, Missouri; her one daughter, Carol F. Randol of Fredericksburg, Virginia; her one brother, Dale H. Riley of Anderson, South Carolina; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.  She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, one grandchild and one great grandchild.

Fern worked as a clerk for the Wonder Bread Store for 12 ½ years, retiring in 1980.  She graduated from Galesburg High School.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #235 and the White Shrine.  Fern was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women’s Circle.
