Richard Stanley Fones

Richard Stanley Fones, 84, of Rio, died at 9:16 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2016 at home.

Funeral arrangements are pending and have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.

Margaret Vivian Carlson Collis

Margaret Vivian Carlson Collis, 99, of Galesburg, Illinois, formerly of Hermon, Illinois, took her last breath surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg, Illinois. 
Margaret was born to loving Swedish immigrant parents, Rudolph and Adina Johnson Carlson on June 6, 1916 at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, Illinois. She was raised and educated in the Galesburg and Knoxville area, graduating from Knoxville High School.  She won the highest honor for singing in Knox County her senior year at Knoxville High School.  She married Clyde F. Collis on April 7, 1935 and he preceded her in death on August 5, 1984.
Margaret is survived by two sons, Dale (Sharon) Collis of Galva, Illinois and William (Marcia) Collis of Galesburg, Illinois; one daughter, Darlene (Bruce) Hartman of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Stacey (Paula) Collis of Elizabeth, Colorado, Shelley Collis of Newburg, Oregon, Gary Collis of Los Angles, California, Dana (Jeff) Schenkel of Carol Stream, Illinois, Sten (Ellen) Hartman of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Ingela Hartman of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; four great-grandchildren, Holly, Nicholas, and Eric Schenkel of Carol Stream, Illinois, and Aida Hartman of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; one brother, Russell (Shirley) Carlson of Abingdon, Illinois; six nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and her cousins extended family in Sweden who she regularly kept in contact with.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Roy Carlson, and one grandson, Sean Collis.
Margaret worked alongside her husband farming the family farm near Hermon, Illinois.  She was also known for baking wedding and graduation cakes and giving piano, organ, and voice lessons.  Margaret and Clyde loved tending to her flower gardens and huge vegetable gardens. Her life was filled with a love of music which she poured out generously.  She sang and also played the organ, piano, guitar, and accordion for nursing homes, and other organizations. She also played the organ for area churches and was in the OAKS Band. 
Margaret was a life time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville where she was part of the Ladies Aid, the Mary Circle, taught Sunday School, and was children’s choir director.  She also belonged to the Knox County Farm Bureau and the Farm Bureau Primetimers.
Funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at 2:30 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in Knoxville, Illinois with visitation being held from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM.  Rev. Michel D. Clark officiating.  Private family burial will take place at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg, Illinois.  Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church. Frances L. Zuck

Frances L. Zuck, 78, of Galesburg, died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016, in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

She was born April 1, 1937 in Raymondville, Texas, the daughter of Earl and Nell Ethel (Pennington) Presley.  She married Otis D. Zuck on January 21, 1956 in Galesburg.

She is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Otis; a son, David Zuck of Sioux City, Iowa; a daughter, Ellen (and Jay) Smith of Dunlap, Illinois; two granddaughters, Erin and Emily Smith; a brother, Earl Presley of Garland, Texas; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.

Frances was a medical transcriptionist at OSF St. Mary Medical Center for 22 years, retiring in 2004.  She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1954.  Frances was an artist who enjoyed sketching and painting nature scenes.  She also was a writer of short stories.  Frances was a bowler and was interested in Native American culture.


Cremation will be accorded.  Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2016, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating.  Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.  Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.

Rita M. Spencer

Rita M. Spencer age 78, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 7:17 A.M. on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Unity Point Methodist in Peoria, Illinois.

She was born on July 7, 1937 in Avon, Illinois the daughter of Howard and Olive Blunt Jones. She attended and graduated from Galesburg High Schools. She married Ralph R. “Bob” Spencer on July 9, 1955. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2013.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading.

Surviving is a daughter, Georgenne Admire of Galesburg, Illinois; three sons, Kenneth W. (and Lisa) Spencer of Naperville, Illinois, Jeffrey (and Joy) Spencer of Galesburg, Illinois, John (and Nancy) Spencer of Las Vegas, Nevada; Eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; a brother, Harold (and Judy) Jones of Killeen, Texas and a sister, Violet (and John) Olson of Colorado springs, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Grandson and three sisters.


Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at East Linwood Cemetery in Galesburg, Illinois. Joseph H. Hagerty


Joseph H. Hagerty, age 65, of Wataga, Illinois died at 7:05 A.M. on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois.

He was born on January 24, 1951 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Joseph L. and Hazel E. Copeland Hagerty. He attended and graduated from ROVA High School. He married Theresa “Terry” Pecharich.

Surviving is his wife Terry Hagerty of Wataga, Illinois; a daughter, Tanya (Scott) Billeter of Gilson, Illinois and a son Joel (Amanda) Hagerty of Abingdon, Illinois; Five grandchildren: Matt and Emma Billeter, and Braden, Bryson and Brennan Hagerty; a sister, Jean (Art) Utzinger of Oquawka, Illinois, and a brother Jim Hagerty of Oneida, Illinois, his twin sister, Joan (Jim) Whitney of Knoxville, Illinois; his mother-in-law: Millie (Wayne) Allen of Galesburg, Illinois; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister-in-law, Joyce Hagerty, and father-in-law, Joseph Pecharich.

He was a parts and delivery salesman for Galesburg Auto and NAPA of Galesburg, Illinois for 22 years. He also loved to farm and did so throughout the years while working. He was of the Catholic Faith and he served in the United States Air Force. He was on the Wataga Village Board for 20 years. He was a member of the snowmobiling club. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He enjoyed being with his grandkids.


Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Wataga, Illinois, with Father Deus-Dadit Byabato officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with a rosary at 6:30 P.M. on Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes in Knoxville, Illinois. Burial will be at the Oneida Cemetery, Oneida, Illinois. In-lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family for a fund to be established at a later date. Michael D. Grady


Michael D. Grady, 71, of Knoxville, Illinois died at 1:44 P.M. Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at his home.

Mike was born on August 15, 1944 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Clyde H. and Margurete Carlton Grady.  He was raised in East Galesburg and graduated from Knoxville High School.  Mike married Ginny Campisi on July 27, 1968 in Galesburg, Illinois.  She preceded him in death on January 3, 2000. 

Mike was a yardmaster and trainmaster for BNSF Railway, retiring in 1999.  He served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1967.

Mike is survived by two sons, Joe (Kelly) Grady of Chicago, Illinois and Dr. Clyde (Angie) Grady of East Galesburg, Illinois; five grandchildren, Maddy Grady, Cassie Grady, Rachael Flacco, Michael Flacco, Nick Flacco, and his grand-dog Baxter; three brothers, Pat Grady of California, Tom Grady of Knoxville, Illinois, and Tim Grady of Missouri; and one sister-in-law, Dolly Gilliam of Galesburg, Illinois.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, Dennis Grady, and one brother-in-law, Tony Campisi. 

The family would like to thank all of their friends for the support shown to them during this time of loss.  Special thanks to the Rob Derham family for their friendship shown to Mike.  Finally, many thanks to his special caregivers over the last three years.

Ruth Margaret Dunlap Sabetti

Ruth Margaret Dunlap Sabetti, 96 of Abingdon, completed her journey to our Savior’s glory on Tuesday, March 29, 2016.   Ruth was the 7th child of 13, born to Louie and Florence Pearl Babb Dunlap on October 29, 1919 in Rantoul, Illinois.
Ruth married Ralph Sabetti of Abingdon, on December 23, 1938 in Champaign, Illinois. She and Ralph operated many businesses in the communities of Abingdon and Bushnell over the years, most notably the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Bushnell, Illinois from 1964 thru their retirement in the mid 1980’s.
In her younger years Ruth enjoyed raising houseplants and outdoor gardens, fishing and travelling.  She was avidly involved in local sewing clubs and enjoyed artistic crafts.  Nearly everyone she met would receive a ribbon woven cross.  Later in retirement Ruth was a member of a group of ladies who made lap robes for nursing homes.  Well into their 80’s Ruth and her group would make several hundred lap robes each year and distribute them to residents in area nursing homes.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph in 1987, her brothers and sisters Eleanore, Viola, Francis, Donald, Arthur, Dorothy, Helen, Harold, Robert and Lawrence and son in law Ronald Graves. 
Surviving siblings are Elizabeth Rettig of Dunnellon, Florida and Mildred (Robert) Sheets of Murphy, North Carolina.  Also surviving are her children; Sue (Marion) Buchanan of Morton, IL, Louise (Kenneth) Batson, of Avon, IL, Cynthia (Ron dec.) Graves of Galesburg, IL and Ralph (Connie) Sabetti of Beardstown, IL, her grandchildren; David (Stacey) Batson, Mark (Christine) Graves, Tina Graves, Eric (Sarah) Sabetti and Andrea (Darrell) Ratermann, and 18 Great Grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday April 1, 2016 from Noon to 1 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 506 N Main Street, Abingdon, IL followed by a Requiem Mass celebrating Ruth’s life at 1 PM.  Interment will follow at Abingdon Cemetery.  The family invites friends to gather for a meal and fellowship following the services at Abingdon Banking Center community room, 805 N Monroe St, Abingdon, IL.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl A. Strickland


Pearl A. Strickland, 68, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 9:05 A.M. Monday, March 28, 2016 at her residence. 

Pearl was born on August 3, 1947 in Galesburg, Illinois the daughter of William W. and Vada J. Curtis Strickland.  She was raised and educated in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School. 

Pearl was the manager of the Knox Galesburg Symphony for 19 years. She loved music, horses, and her dogs. 

Pearl is survived by her son, William Algren of Galesburg, Illinois; grandson, Skylar Algren who is serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, Colorado; and a her brother, John “Eddie” Strickland of Macomb, Illinois. 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

C. Kent Rose


C. Kent Rose, 48, of Knoxville, Illinois died 11:12 P.M. on Monday, March 28, 2016 at OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center, Galesburg, Illinois. 

Kent was born on July 1, 1967 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Ronald L. and Patricia Davis Rose.  He was raised and educated in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School. 

Kent is survived by, two daughters, Samantha Rose and Sumer Rose both of Knoxville, Illinois; his mother, Patricia Rose of Knoxville, Illinois; two brothers, Michael (Nina) Rose of Oquawka, Illinois and Patrick Rose of Dallas, Texas; nieces and nephews, Jessica Rose of Houston, Texas, Eric Rose of Dahinda, Illinois, Jennifer Rose of Knoxville, Illinois,  Aubrey Rose of Mendota, Illinois, Molly Rose of Galesburg, Illinois, and Ashley (Tim) Schrad of Omaha, Nebraska; and two great-nieces; Rebekah and Kyleigh Rose of Des Moines, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald L. Rose. 

Kent worked as a roofing contractor all of his life.  He was the owner of Ron Rose Roofing. 

Kent was a dedicated fan of both the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

Wilbert B. Palmer

“Another tired soldier went Home.”  Wilbert B. Palmer, 79, of Galesburg, died at 5:55 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2016 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

He was born December 31, 1936 in Black Lick, Pennsylvania, the son of Wilbert and Rose Palmer.  He married Helga BÓ§cker on November 2, 1957 in Ulm Germany.

He is survived by his ex-wife and caregiver, Helga Palmer (and Mike) Allen of Galesburg; two granddaughters, Elizabeth (and Kris) Palmer of Galesburg and Holly Curran of Flower Mound, Texas; three sisters, Peggy Palmer of Pennsylvania, Judy Palmer of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and Katherine (and Danny) Hall of Belleview, Florida; and one nephew, Raymond Palmer of Pennsylvania.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Robert M. Palmer on December 27, 2015.

Wilbert served in the United States Army for 20 years before retiring.  He served during the time of the Berlin Crisis.  He was also stationed in Korea and three tours in Vietnam.

Wilbert enjoyed woodworking and landscaping and was a gun enthusiast.


Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2016 in the Abingdon Cemetery.  Rev. Heath Michael Prescott Alfaro

Heath Michael Prescott Alfaro, 32, of Galesburg, died at 9:43 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2016 at home.
Heath was born in Galesburg, Illinois on October 8, 1983.  He married Samantha Anne Mason on December 12, 2008 in Galesburg.  Sam survives of Galesburg.  Heath is also survived by his two daughters, Katelynn Rae and Kenley Joyce Alfaro both at home; and one son, Kallen Michael Alfaro who is due on April 21, 2016. Along with his children, Heath is also survived by his parents, Steven and Sharon “Sherry” Alfaro of Galesburg; his maternal grandparents, Sam (Bertie) Powell of Knoxville; his birth mother, Connie (Van) Becker of St. Louis, MO.  Also surviving is three brothers, Troy (Ericka) Prescott of Normal, Joshua (Sarah) Prescott of Heyworth, and Antonio (Jen) Alfaro of Davenport; three sisters, Christy (Brandon) Tate of Heyworth, Angie Prescott of Bloomington, and Rebecca Alfaro of Keokuk, IA; one step brother, Dewey Prescott of Galesburg; and a maternal step grandmother, Carol Hornbaker of Monmouth.  Also surviving are his mother and father in law, Tammy and Tim Mason of Stronghurst; a brother in law, Allen (Emily) Mason of Milwaukee, WI; a sister in law, Kristen Mason of Davenport, IA; several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.  Heath was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ray and Carmen Alfaro; his maternal grandmother, Helen Hornbaker; and his maternal grandfather, Don Hornbaker.
Heath had worked for several years as a truck driver for Ratcliff trucking, transporting U.S. Mail.  He enjoyed dirt track racing, watching sports on television, especially his beloved Chicago Cubs and Bears.  He was an avid wrestling fan and enjoyed watching it with his girls.
Cremation rites will be accorded.  Private family graveside services will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg.  A memorial visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  Memorials may be made to the family for his children.  Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family atwww.watsonthomas.com.

Patsy Ruth Bond Berry



Patsy Ruth Bond Berry passed from this life 7:13 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2016 at the Care Center of Abingdon surrounded by her three children. Services for Mrs. Berry, will be Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Jon Sibley will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Flowers are permitted or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Knox College.

She was born on November 21, 1930, in Harlan Kentucky, the daughter of Ona Robinson Bond and Dr. Henry F. Bond. On September 30, 1950, Mrs. Berry married Rush Mitchell Berry, a union that lasted 54 years. She is a graduate of Galesburg High School in 1948. She attended the University of Illinois for two years and graduated from Knox College. Patsy was a school teacher in CUSD District 205 (Galesburg, Il) for 35 years. Patsy volunteered at Cottage Hospital and was a Girl Scout Leader. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Second Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and served as church treasurer.


She was survived by two daughters, Patsy Michele Berry (formerly Lamothe) of St. Louis, Missouri, Katherine (Kaye) Elizabeth Berry-Gipson of Galesburg, one son, Rush Henry and Lisa Berry of Madison, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren, Isidore J. Lamothe, IV (Pete), Patrick M. Lamothe, Josette R. Gipson, Willie L. Gipson, Mitchell B. Gipson, Micaela F. Berry, Megan P. Berry, Matthew R. Berry, and Mya A. Berry; and six great-grandchildren; one nephew Leslie F. Bond; three nieces Candace Bond-McKeever (Steve), Lou Ellen McElmurry and Roxy Schumann; a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous dear close friends.

John H. Robson


John H. Robson, 84, of Wataga, Illinois died on Monday, March 28, 2016 in Galesburg.
He was born on March 16, 1932 in Galesburg, Illinois to William H. and Ruth L. Sweeney Robson.  He married Chey M. Sigwalt on June 18, 1955.  She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Michael Robson of Wataga, David Robson of Springfield, Illinois and Daniel (and Tracy) Robson of Mandeville, Louisiana; three grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua and Stephanie; and a sister, Ruth Ann Robson of Ames, Iowa.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William “Mike” Robson.
John served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1956.
He was a 1950 graduate of Galesburg High School and a 1954 graduate of Iowa State College where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
He farmed for more than 60 years retiring in 2015.
He was an avid woodworker, a Reading Buddy, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the University of Illinois Ag Council.  He served as a trustee for Sparta Township for 26 years.

Cremation will be accorded.  A Celebration of John’s Life will be held from 4:00PM to 6:00PM Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Rescue Mission.  Online condolences may be left at www.h-p-w.com

Shirley M. Stiffler

Shirley M. Stiffler, 80, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 3:35 A.M. Sunday, March 27, 2016 in Knoxville, Illinois.

Dorothy Surber


 Dorothy “Dot” Mae Surber, 97 of Court Yard Estates in Bushnell and formerly of Avon, passed away at 10:11 a.m. Sunday, March 27, 2016 at the Care Center of Abingdon. 
  She was born September 18, 1918 in New Boston, the daughter of Ora and Emma Pearl McCune Deatherage.  She married Bud Banta and he preceded her in death.  She later married Kyle N. Surber on August 29, 1942. 
  Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of almost 74 years, Kyle; one daughter, Sherrilyn (Cork) Dalton of rural Gilson; three sons, Stan (Judy) Banta of Oquawka, Bob (Sharon) Banta of Oquawka and Terry Surber of East Peoria; nine grandchildren, Brett Banta, Kelly Arciniega, Robbie Banta, Debbie Pompe,   Darrin Dalton, Brad Dalton, Jason Dalton, Kelly Kimmitt and Melanie Price; and several great-grandchildren.
  She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
  Dot had lived in Little York, Avon, Bushnell and Abingdon.  She worked at the Galesburg Research Hospital for many years before retiring from there.  She loved fishing with her sons, playing cards and bingo, and spending time with her family.
  Cremation will be accorded.  Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Avon Cemetery.  Rev. Russ Witkowski will officiate.  There will be no visitation.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Patricia L. Morey

Patricia L. Morey age 87 of Bushnell, IL passed away at 4:20 A.M. Saturday March 26, 2016 at Heartland Health Care Center in Canton, IL.  She was born on September 29, 1928 in Galesburg, IL to Ross and Emma Cowperthwaite Van Syckel.  She married Alva l. Morey in Bushnell, IL on September 17, 1949 and he preceded her in death on July 24, 2004.  Pat is survived by 4 Sons and 2 Daughters – Michael (Mary) Morey of Tucson, AZ, Stephen Morey of Avon, IL, Kenneth (Stephanie) Morey of Bushnell, IL, David (Cindy) Morey of Rockford, IL, Marianne (Kenneth) Smith of Lewistown, IL and Elizabeth Schapals of Round Lake Beach, IL, 9 Grandchildren, 9 Great-Grandchildren, and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by her Parents and 1 Sister (Barbara Mixer).
Pat was a lifelong member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, a member of the Grandmother’s Club, and 4H.  She retired as a secretary for Homer’s Ready Mix & Fertilizer Co.  She and her husband Alva enjoyed dining out, dancing, and time with her family.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. Joe Rescinito

Galesburg – Joe Rescinito, 91 of Galesburg, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. 
  He was born December 28, 1924 in Abingdon, the son of Matteo and Rachele Reciniello Rescinito.  He married Joan “Jody” Rogers on June 30, 1951 in Abingdon.
  Joe is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Joan; his children, Rachel (John) Bicego of Galesburg and Sam (Cindy) Rescinito of Galesburg; four grandchildren, Nicki (Matthew) Huels, Joe Stull, Kelby Rescinito and Alyssa Rescinito; two great-grandchildren, Wynne and Cormac Huels.  He was also blessed with three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren from the Painter family and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren from the Bicego family.  Joe is also survived by two sisters, Rose Cundy of St. Petersburg, Florida and Elvira (William) Krogmeier of Holyoke, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and three adult sisters, Anna Rescinito, Mary Pandolfo and Antoinette Legate.
  He grew up in Abingdon and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1945.  He served three years in WW II with the US Army Coast Artillery in the Philippines and Okinawa.  He worked for the telephone company in Galesburg for 35 years.  After he and Jody retired, they moved to Lakeland, Florida where they resided for 21 years before moving back to Galesburg in 2007.  He was passionate about his faith and he was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Galesburg.  He also volunteered many hours at Costa School.  He was a member of American Legion Post #285 in Galesburg.
  Cremation will be accorded.  Private burial of his ashes will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 of Abingdon. 
  Memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Galesburg.  Monsignor Ernest Pizzamiglio will officiate.  The family will receive friends at a luncheon at the Parish Activity Center following the service.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Peggy Ann Venard

Peggy Ann Venard, 84, of Monmouth, Illinois, died suddenly on Friday, March 25, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois of a stroke. Peggy was born March 15, 1932 in Gladstone, Illinois, the daughter of Gordon and Ida (Nelson) Colley. She was raised in Oquawka and attended Oquawka public schools and Gladstone-Oquawka High School. She worked at Formfit in Monmouth for five years before marrying Robert Venard on December 20, 1954. In later years she worked at Admiral, but was chiefly occupied as a homemaker. Peggy was a devoted animal lover. She was a faithful auction enthusiast for many years. She was an avid reader with a keen interest in history. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. She is a member of the Heritage United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth.  Peggy was a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Warren County Doll Club. She was formerly a cub scout den mother. She was a devoted patron of charities to benefit the homeless. Peggy is survived by her three children, Robert Venard, Jr. of Oquawka, IL, Carolyn Cooper of Springfield, IL, Nancy Joann (Jeff) Davis of Chesapeake, VA, her cat, Missy, and her dog, PeeGee, five grandchildren; Jennifer (Matt) Howard, Christopher Gorski, Robert Alex Cooper, Megan Davis, and Emily (Danny) Sierra, four great-grandchildren; Dylan, Ava, Ashley, and Lily. She is also survived by three siblings; Ann (Floyd) Ward of East Moline, IL, Charles Colley of Oquawka, IL, and Clayton Dennis Colley of Washington, OK. Many nieces and nephews also survive. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and four siblings; Ruby McGuire, Delores Brill, Jimmy Colley, and Joseph Colley.

A Gathering of Family and Friends is planned for Wednesday, March 30, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home. Cremation is being accorded. Mrs. Lorene M. Johnson

Mrs. Lorene M. Johnson, 95, of Galesburg, Illinois left this life for eternal life on March 25, 2016.  She was greatly loved by her family and will be missed by all who knew her.  Born the seventh child of Albert and Josephine Isaacson in Kirkwood, Illinois, the family later moved to Raritan, Illinois where Lorene grew up.  She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Stronghurst, Illinois and graduated from Media High School.  She became a loving wife to Ray A. Johnson on October 5, 1940 in Galesburg and assisted her husband in farming near Oneida, Stronghurst and the majority of their years together on a farm west of Galesburg.  She was a member of Coldbrook Christian Church where she had taught Sunday School and was involved in many activities of the church over her lifetime.  In retirement, she and her husband loved to travel and camp.  In early retirement, they spent many summers in Conifer and Steamboat, Colorado and Alamo and McAllen, Texas.  Lorene enjoyed being with her family for any and all occasions.  China painting, handwork, crocheting, reading, tending flowers and watching birds were among her favorite hobbies.  She was a wonderful role model to all her family and is survived by a son, Lonnie (Ruth Ann) Johnson of Galesburg and a daughter, Dixie (Norm) Cannon of Monument, Colorado.  She is also survived by six grandchildren: Kevin (Jodi) Johnson of Galesburg; Dr. Rodney (Wendy) Johnson of Champaign, Illinois; Kimberly (Steve) Buyck of Liberty, Illinois; Kristine (Craig) Schmitt of Centennial, Colorado; Michelle (Dale) Jackson of Indianapolis, Indiana; Jennifer (Philip) Haratsaris of Longmont, Colorado and 14 great-grandchildren: Cami (Ryan) Tapscott of Silvis, Illinois; Jenna Johnson of Galesburg; Chad Johnson of Surprise, Arizona; Justin Johnson of Indianapolis; Kara Johnson of Chicago, Illinois; Mackenzie Buyck of Macomb, Illinois; Rachel Buyck of Liberty; Illinois; Madison and Renee Jackson of Indianapolis; Cailey and Zachary Schmitt of Centennial, Colorado; Nicholas, Lucas and Zhuming Haratsaris of Longmont and a brother, Isaacson of Stronghurst, a Sister-in-law, Marge Isaacson of Peoria, Illinois and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, five brothers and her husband on July 19, 2003 after nearly 63 years of marriage.

Jo Swanson



Jo Swanson, 73, of Galesburg, died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at home.

She was born August 15, 1942 in Galesburg, the daughter of Donald E. and Wilma E. (Goodale) Swanson.

She is survived by her brother, Jim Swanson and his wife, Judy, of Sugar Grove, Illinois; her sister, Jillie Swanson of Galesburg; and loving nephews and nieces, Ray Johnson and his wife, Linda, of Novi, Michigan, Greg Johnson of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, Jon Gilmour and his wife, Sherri, of Decatur, Illinois, Jim Gilmour and his wife, Sarah, of Alpha, Illinois, Ann Holiday and her husband, John, of Decatur, Illinois, and Elaine Pinta and her husband, Mike, of Cortland, Illinois; and several great nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jean Gilmour.

Jo worked at Hi-Lo in Abingdon for 44 years as a stock clerk in various departments.  She had a deep belief in God and his son, and lived by His grace and forgiveness.  Jo enjoyed bowling and woodworking.  She had a lifelong interest in Stearman airplanes.

The family would like to thank the Kisler brothers, Dick, Clyde, and Lyle, for treating Jo like a trusted friend.  Jo enjoyed the friendship of her co-workers and customers at the Hi-Lo in Abingdon.  We would also like to thank the Galesburg Central Fire Department Station for the many lift-assistant calls, with special thanks to Battalion Captains, Todd Peterson and Chip Timmons.  Thanks also to Chip for Jo’s special tour of the Stearman Fly-In.  The family extends deep gratitude to Dr. Robert Hickerson for caring for Jo throughout her life and to Hospice Compassus, with special thanks to nurses, Stacy and Kim.

Cremation will be accorded.  Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  Graveside service will follow in East Linwood Cemetery at 11 a.m. with Rev. Norma Jean E. Riley

Norma Jean E. Riley, age 75 of Lincoln, Ill. formerly of Galesburg, Ill. died Thursday March 24, 2016 at 3:15 a.m. at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield, Ill.
Jean was born May 11, 1940 in Copley Township, Ill. the daughter of Norman Woodside and Imogene Ross Woodside.  She married Robert Riley.
She is survived by two sons:  Mark (and Rose Mary) Riley of Galesburg, Ill. and Michael (and Tammy) Riley of Anderson, S.C., a daughter Tina (and David) Babcock of East Galesburg, Ill., two brothers: Robert (and Joan) Woodside of Galesburg, Ill., and Dale Woodside of Lincoln, Ill., a sister Kathryn McDermott of Galesburg, Ill., two sister in law’s Loretta Woodside of Oneida, Ill., and Connie Woodside of Nashville, Ill., twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.  She is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers Richard, Ross, and Larry.
Jean was raised in the Oneida, Ill. area and attended ROVA High School, graduating in 1958.  After a few years in Arizona, North Carolina and Texas, she moved to Galesburg in 2006.  She was the Secretary/Receptionist to Bills Auto Trim for 16 years and also worked at Wal-Mart when she lived in Texas. 
Jean was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Galesburg and presently a member of Faith Assembly of God Church in Lincoln, Ill.. She enjoyed gardening.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday March 29, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Pastor Darren Palmer officiating. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. M. Neil Spencer


M. Neil Spencer, 70, of Galesburg, died Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 7:18 p.m.
Neil was born May 28, 1945 in Galesburg, the son of Andrew and Helen Roberts Spencer.  Neil married Alice Wright on August 8, 1963 in Waukeegan, Illinois.  Neil is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alice; two sons, Nick (Sarah) Spencer of Marion, Illinois and Dustin (Becky) Spencer of Peoria, Illinois; one daughter, Kimberly (Kevin) Good of Leclaire, Iowa; and one brother, John (Bonnie) Spencer of Galesburg.  He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Matthew and Jessica Spencer, James and Mera Spencer, and Brendon, Chrystina, and Sydney Good; and six great grandchildren.  Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Spencer and Helen Thomas as well as one brother, Robert. 
Neil worked as a safety equipment salesman for several years, prior to becoming disabled.  After he became disabled Neil became a very active spokesman for people with disabilities.  Neil was a very active member of D.I.G.I.T. (Disabled Individuals Getting Together) along with several additional disabled organizations including the Illinois Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities. He was also a member of Bethel Baptist Church and A.B.A.T.E.  Neil was one of the founding members of Stone-Hayes in Galesburg.  He also designed and helped build many wheelchair ramps in Galesburg.

JoAnn D. Stout


JoAnn D. Stout, 53, of Galesburg, went to be with our Heavenly Father, the evening of March 23, 2016.
 
JoAnn was born January 13, 1963, in Galesburg, the daughter of John C. Stout and Rebecca A. (Horn) Stout.
 
JoAnn is survived by her children, whom she loved dearly, sons,  Steven (Michelle) Mackey, Daniel Steward, Adam Simonson, all of Galesburg; her daughter,  Rachel (Chuck) Sloan of Bellevue, NE; and her grandchildren whom she adored, Tanner Mackey, Cody Park, Arianna, Audrey and Tristan Sloan.  JoAnn is also survived by her loving parents, John Stout and Beckie Stout; her devoted sisters, LeAnn (Terry) Boone and Jonna (Phil) Stout; her special friends, Lisa (Rick) Poulson and Terri Sargeant; as well as her sister Shelly (Jeremy) Stokes; many nephews and nieces whom she loved as her own.  She was preceded by her grandparents, uncles, aunts and her great nephew.
 
She worked various jobs, most notably at New China and Rite Track CafĂ©’s.  She also worked at Wareco, Farmland, and In-Home Health.
 
JoAnn was a loving person with a heart of gold. She always tried to make you feel special.  She was always there to lend a helping hand whenever you needed it.  If you ever needed to know what was going on with anyone, she was the go to girl.  She was very determined and always did things her way.  
 
When she wasn't spending time with her family and friends, she enjoyed camping and fishing and caught some great fish.  She went to some awesome concerts.  When it came to crafts she dove right in to them and made some of the most amazing stuff.  Each of these hobbies she totally enjoyed.  
 
Visitation will be Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m.  Deacon Michael Crummer will officiate.  Cremation rites will be accorded following the services.  A luncheon will follow the services at the Thomas Legacy Center at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the family in c/o her son Steven Mackey.  Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com
