Dale Sundberg

Dale Sundberg, 88 of Galesburg, Illinois died Monday morning, September 26 at his son, Dan Sundberg’s home in Greenfield, Wisconsin.


Dale was born July 1, 1928 in Galesburg, the son of Emil and Helen (Goff) Sundberg. He married Meredith Joan Shore in West Liberty, Iowa on September 2, 1951. She preceded him in death on December 20, 2014.


He is survived by his children, Rick (Lori) Sundberg and Kevin Sundberg both of Galesburg, Dan (Charmagne) Sundberg of Greenfield, Wisconsin and Vicky (Ed) Ray of Knoxville, Illinois; one brother Howard Sundberg of Oak Run; and one sister, Iris Hovind of Abingdon; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Dale was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Allen Dale Sundberg in 1955 who died as a baby.


Dale grew up in Galesburg, graduated from Galesburg High School in 1946 and later from Carl Sandburg College. He was a member of First Christian Church. He served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War. He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.


Dale worked for the City of Galesburg Fire Department for 30 years, retiring in 1984 as Assistant Chief. He then went on to work for the State of Illinois Fire Marshall’s Department, where he worked in training and education before retiring in 1995.


When Dale wasn’t working, he could be found at Oak Run. Boating, waterskiing and fishing were the activities that made him the happiest. He and his wife Joan spent their vacations every year at Lake of the Ozarks with their dear friends Ralph and Louise Mackey. Both families spent two weeks every summer in the Ozarks until the children were grown. Once their children were grown, they, too brought their children to the Ozarks for vacation. It was a tradition that spanned more than 45 years. Dale taught all of the children and grandchildren to water-ski and had the ability to teach anyone who wanted to learn. Dale water-skied every year on his birthday with the last time being on his 75th birthday.


Dale was also an avid hunter and his sons and grandsons share his love of nature to this day. Dale and his son, Rick, continued their love of deer hunting together until just a few years ago.


Dale and his wife Joan had a wide circle of friends. Louise and the late Ralph Mackie were very dear friends of Dale and Joan as is Jan McCarthy and the late Ron McCarthy.


Dale’s steady, consistent and loving presence will be missed by his family, but his devotion and commitment to them will be forever cherished.


Visitation will be from 12:00-1:30 on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral services will follow with Deacon Michael Crummer officiating. Robert J. “Bob” Zefo

Robert J. “Bob” Zefo, 89, of Oneida, died at 8:48 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2016 at home.

He was born March 21, 1927, in Galesburg, the son of Tony and Elizabeth (Morrissey) Zefo. He married Evelyn L. Conn on March 22, 1952, in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on August 15, 1984.

He is survived by a daughter, Vicki Zefo of Galesburg; a brother, Jack Zefo of Galesburg; a sister, Patricia Morris in California; three grandchildren, Heather (and Paul) Peters, Jenna (and Bill) Benson, and Zac Zefo; three great grandchildren, Kyler, Jeremy, and Mia; and one great grandchild on the way. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his companion of 25 years, Ruthie Tucker in 2009; a son, Robert A. “Bob” Zefo January 28, 2006; his parents; three brothers, William “Gabby”, Tony, and Joseph; and a sister, Betty Owen.

Bob was plumber/pipefitter with Local 25 for over 30 years. He was raised in the Catholic faith.

Bob served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific. He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion and VFW Post 2257. He had served on the American Legion Honor Guard for many years.

Bob had also been a member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed Stearman planes and taking care of the “ranch”.

Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, September 30, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors by VFW 2257/Legion 285 Veterans Honor Guard. Lori Angelina Strohmaier Eklund


Lori Eklund, 53, of rural Knoxville, passed away peacefully at 12:00 A.M. Saturday, September 24, 2016 in her home.
Lori was born December 14, 1962 in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of the late Bill and Lee Strohmaier of Oquawka, IL. She was raised in Galesburg, later moved and graduated in the Union High School Class of 1981 in Biggsville, IL. Lori married Roger Eklund, October 16, 1987 in Knoxville, IL.
She is survived by her husband, Roger Eklund; two sons, Tyler and Kyle Eklund of rural Knoxville, IL; sisters, Karren Whited of Virginia Beach, VA, Cheryl (Mike) Fergusson of Galesburg, IL, Sharon Wilkins of Galesburg, IL, Linda (Dale) Steward of Alpha, IL, Brenda (Fred) Stewart of Oquawka, IL, Pam Lytle of Knoxville, IL; brothers, Bruce (Brenda) Strohmaier of Tyner, KY and Matt Wilkins of Alpha, IL, Step-Brother Tim Wilcoxen of Gunzburg, Germany and Two Step-Sisters, Marsha Wilcoxen of Bushnell, IL and Julie Wilcoxen of Galesburg, IL. She was preceded in death by her sister, Cheryl Jones.
Lori worked as a cook at Knoxville Junior High School, where she enjoyed serving the children of the community. As a mother of two, she loved spending time hunting for mushrooms and arrowheads with her family. Lori enjoyed the outdoors and gardening; she was known for her homemade salsa, pickled green beans and stuffed mushrooms at Christmastime. Some of her favorite things included red roses, covered bridges, kittens and watching her sons, Tyler and Kyle play football.
Memorial Services will be held Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Oaks Community Church, 1868 Congregation Rd, Dahinda, IL 61428 Dahinda, with Pastor Marty Briney, officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00am-11:00am at the church, with a funeral service to follow. The family requests that memorials be made to ROWVA Cougars Football team or Beacon of Hope Hospice. Darlene L. Christianson

Darlene L. Christianson, 82, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 7:49 P.M. Friday, September 23, 2016 at her home.
 
She was born on July 11, 1934 in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of Kenneth and Louise Sargeant Leighton.  She was raised and educated in Galesburg, Illinois.  She married Orvis Lamb on January 26, 1952 in Galesburg, Illinois.  She later married Donald F. Christianson on July 22, 1995 in Galesburg, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on October 21, 2007.
 
Darlene worked as a secretary for several schools and businesses including Office Systems in Galesburg for 11 years and later for KCCDD in Galesburg, retiring in 1995.
 
She attended First Christian Church in Galesburg and she was a member of the Moose Lodge 115 in Galesburg, Illinois. 
 
Darlene enjoyed traveling, bowling, walking, and just being outdoors. 
 
Darlene is survived by a sister, Virginia (Roy) Windom of Tennessee; two sons, Terry Lamb of Walker, Minnesota, and Mark (Sheila) Lamb of Galesburg, Illinois.  Along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters, Betty Keener and Lucille Rogers. 
 
Visitation will be held from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.  on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, Illinois.  A celebration of life will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s.  Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois in charge of arrangements. Rhonda Lynn Olson DeCrane

Rhonda Lynn Olson DeCrane, 54, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 8:50 A.M. Sunday, September 25, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois.
 
She was born on June 25, 1962 in Galesburg, Illinois, the daughter of Russell and Ruth Ann Clark Olson. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1982. Rhonda married Gary F. DeCrane on May 13, 1988 in Galesburg, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 8, 2010.
 
Rhonda was a stay at home mom for many years and she also owned her own business, Country Cockatiels.
 
Rhonda attended Northwoods Church in Galesburg. She enjoyed watching NASCAR races, tending to her flowers and garden, being with her friends at Mary Allen West, and loved her birds. Most of all Rhonda loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren.
 
Rhonda is survived by a daughter, Amy (Cris Courson) Haring of Galesburg, Illinois; a son, Aaron DeCrane of North Carolina; her mother, Ruth Ann Olson, of Galesburg, Illinois; three grandchildren, Bryce, Kholby, and Kaleb Courson all of Galesburg, Illinois; a brother, Rusty (Kathy) Olson of Weston, Wisconsin; a sister, Roxanne (Tim) Thiede of Boise, Idaho; a brother-in-law, Dennis (Deb) DeCrane of Abingdon, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews. 
 
She was preceded in death by her father and husband.
 
Graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 30, 2016 at the Woodhull Cemetery, Woodhull, Illinois. Pastor Andrew Wingo will officiate. Sherri L. Lafferty

Sherri L. Lafferty, 56, of Alexis, Illinois died at 11:10 pm Wednesday, September 21, 2016 in Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.

She was born August 14, 1960 in Galesburg, Illinois. She married J.R. Lafferty on August 13, 2016 in Alexis. He survives.

Also surviving are her parents, Wendell and Sandy Hull of Punta Gorda, Florida; her son, Andrew C. Peck (DeShawn Barrett) of Chicago, Illinois; two step sons, Justin Lafferty of Alexis and Aaron Wayne (Dara) Duke of Galesburg; two step daughters, Jenny (Trent) McKeown and Janelle (Eric) Duckwiler both of Alexis; her brother, Richard P. Hull of Chandler, Arizona; her sister, Diana (Gale) Sickles of Abingdon, Illinois; two step brothers, Brian Swanson of Wrightstown, Wisconsin and Eric (Jen) Swanson of Chanhassen, Minnesota and ten step grandchildren.

Sherri worked as a secretary for Galesburg schools for several years. She later was the administrator’s assistant for the Galesburg Community Foundation for several years. She graduated from Abingdon High School. Sherri was a past member of the First Church of God in Galesburg. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She loved being outdoors. She loved her pets, Dewey and Freeload.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Pastor Sue Shike will officiate. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 pm Friday, September 30, 2016 at the chapel. Burial will be in Alexis Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alexis Fire Department or Galesburg Community Foundation. Ventura Maciel

Ventura Maciel, 89, of Galesburg, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Heartland Health Care.
Ventura was born July 13, 1927 in Fort Madison, IA the daughter of Pordifo and Juanita Andrade Moreno. She married Walter Maciel on July 1, 1950 in Ft. Madison, IA. Ventura is survived by two sons, Ludger (Marti) Maciel and Vincent Maciel both of Galesburg; three daughters, Anna (John) Allen and Marguerite (Kevin) McCoy, both of Galesburg and Janice (Larry) Nimmo of Amarillo, TX; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter on December 14, 2000; a daughter, Valerie Cozad on July 14, 2016; one brother; and two sisters.
Ventura worked for Sheaffer Pen Company while living in Ft. Madison. After moving to Galesburg, she worked for Gross Galesburg and retired from Carhartt in 1985. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Ventura considered any time with family and friends time well spent. While living at Heartland she enjoyed attending many activities.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Rev. William Miller, IC will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg. Jason Lee James

Jason Lee James, 42, of rural East Galesburg, died at 1:03 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2016 at home.
Jason was born on March 18, 1974 in Jackson, TN the son of Terry E. James and Linda M. Bartlett. Jason is survived by his mother, Linda M. (Dave) Jones of Wataga and Terry E. James of Delong; one son, Jason James, Jr. of Raytown, MO; and two daughters, Autumn and Cassie James both of Knoxville.
Jason received his certificate in welding from Carl Sandburg College and went on to become a qualified Butler Welder, working at Butler MFG for 10 years. He later worked at Komatsu. Jason was a member of OAKS Community Church in Dahinda. He enjoyed spending time with his children; competing in mud drags with his dad, fishing, and in general having a good time.
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Mary F. Rankin

Robert N. “Bob” Greene

Mr. Robert N. “Bob” Greene, 76, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 2:00 am Thursday, September 22, 2016 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

He was born February 15, 1940 in Galesburg the son of Harold and Dorothy Linder Greene. He married Sara Hamilton in 1960 in Galesburg. He later married Mary M. Harvey on June 24, 1977 in Moline, Illinois. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1990.

He is survived by three sons, Bryan and Tim Greene both of Galesburg and Jeff Greene of Boulder, Colorado; his sister, Joann (Walt) Dagen of Galesburg four grandchildren, Ashley, Ozzy, Christopher and Megan, three great grandchildren and a special friend, Joan Woods of Oneida, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Judy Logsdon.

Bob worked at Maytag Corporation for 4 years. He was a firefighter for the City of Galesburg for 20 years and had co-owned and operated, with Thomas Lockhart, L&G Motors in Galesburg for 5 years. Bob graduated from Galesburg High School in 1958 and Carl Sandburg College with an associate’s degree in 1969. He was a member of the Retired Firefighters Association.

Thomas “Buddy” Harkless

Thomas “Buddy” Harkless, 84, of Oquawka, IL formerly of Maquon, IL died at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at the Schlotzhauer Home in Oquawka.

He was born July 17, 1932 in Peoria, IL the son of George and Marjorie (Downard) Harkless. 

Thomas served with the United States Air Force.

Thomas worked for Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg for 21 years.

Survivors include his sister, Lois Harkless of Peoria along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 brothers and sisters.

Cremation has been accorded. No services are planned at this time.  Memorials may be given to the Schlotzhauer Home in Oquawka, IL. William "Bill" H Babcock Jr.

William "Bill" H Babcock Jr., 70, of Galesburg, died at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at home.

He was born May 6, 1946 to William H. and Mary (Sobczek) Babcock Sr. in Chicago, Illinois. His father preceded him in death.

He married Sheila Harper (deceased) on August 30 1978. They raised six children, Sheila Farris (Carl) of Augusta, Illinois, Billy Glen Babcock (deceased), Raymond Babcock of Galesburg, Marybeth Smith of New Windsor, Illinois, James Babcock of Galesburg, and Josh Mulkey of Galesburg. He had eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. His mother, Mary Carson survives of Knoxville. He is also survived by three brothers, Harry of Monmouth, Thomas of Danville, Illinois, and Timothy of Paxton, Illinois; and two sisters, Lisa German of Tacoma, Washington and Sharron Babcock of Gifford, Illinois.

Bill served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a truck driver for many years and later was a school bus driver in Galesburg. Bill earned his Associate’s Degree in Metallurgy from Carl Sandburg College. He passed his time working on cars, collecting baseball cards, and HO scale and Lionel trains. He loved to go bargain hunting for antiques at flea markets. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren whenever possible.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Military honors will be offered at 4 p.m. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.

Helen I. Broeg,

Helen I. Broeg, age 83, of Oquawka, Illinois passed away at 4:00 am on September 22, 2016 at her Oquawka residence. Helen was born on January 31, 1933 on a farm near Joy, Illinois and is the daughter of Clarence and Beulah Nesbitt Weeks. She was raised in Aledo, where she attended local schools and graduated from the Aledo High School in 1951. Helen first was married to Warren Mattson on June 9, 1996 in Reno, Nevada and he passed away. She later married Paul Broeg and he also has preceded her in death. Helen was employed as dispatcher for consolidated "Freightways" formerly of Burlington, Iowa. She has been retired since 1990. She enjoyed Sewing, Quilting, and Crocheting, Camping, as well as her garden and gardening. She is survived by her daughters, Becky (Robert) Maynard of Aledo, Illinois; and Kelly (Jack) Kindig of Oquawka, Illinois. Three sons survive, Brian Mattson of Moline, Illinois; Blaine (Tammy) Mattson of Oquawka, Illinois; and Bobby (LuAnn) Mattson of Oquawka, Illinois. One step son, Jerry (Connie) Mattson of Aledo, Illinois. There are ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren surviving. She is preceded in her death by her parents, her husbands, and eight siblings.
Cremation rites are being accorded. Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois is in charge of the local arrangements. No visitation of funeral services are currently being planned. Linda L. Seward

Linda L. Seward, 63, of Prairie City, IL passed away at 9:00 AM Wednesday September 21, 2016 peacefully at her residence. She was born September 06, 1953 in Greenfield, IN to Donald and Betty (Burkett) Cain. She married Delbert E. Seward on December 03, 1988 in Victoria, IL. He survives.
Also surviving are two step-children, David Seward of Seymour, IN; Wendy (Michael) Geltmacher of Bushnell, IL; six step-grandchildren; two sisters, Tina Middleton and Darlene Gossage.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Linda was an avid outdoorsman; she enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, yardwork and mowing the lawn. She loved going to the boat and gambling.
Funeral services will be at 6:00 PM Tuesday September 27, 2016 at the Corman Memorial Home in Avon, where visitation will be one hour prior to services from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Joan L. Deuger

Joan L. Deuger, age 84, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 7:00 am on Sunday September 18, 2016 at her Monmouth residence. Joan was born on May 16, 1932 in Alexis, Illinois and is the daughter of Arch L. and Fern Mills McKelvie. Joan was raised in Alexis, Illinois where she attended public school and graduated from the Alexis High School in 1950. She then entered Monmouth College with a math major and graduated with the class of 1953. She later took classes at Western Illinois University in Speech Therapy from 1968 to 1970. Joan taught school in Arlington Heights for a time and then taught a year in the Monmouth Public Schools. She later taught adult education at Achievement Industries for several years and also served as a substitute teacher. While attending Monmouth College she was employed at the Rivoli Theater and also served as a nurses aid at Monmouth Hospital. She later worked several years at Far and Near Travel Agency and later did alterations in her home for "The Model " clothier of Monmouth. Joan married Donald R. Deuger on July 17, 1954 and they have been a long time member of First Christian Church here in Monmouth, IL. where she has sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, was a member of it's Missionary Circle, the Women's Council and has served as Church Treasurer. Joan is active with the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and has been a member of and is the Regent for the Mildred Warner Washington chapter of the DAR. Her main interests include her church, home and family, sewing, reading, travel, and genealogy. She is currently the Vice President of the Warren County Genealogical Society and served as it's regent. Joan is survived by her husband, Donald of Monmouth, Illinois, five children, Mark (Jodi) Deuger of Groton, Massachusetts; Jayme Deuger of Scottsdale, Arizona; Donna (Per) Guldbeck of Ft.Wayne, Indiana; Roberta Goforth of Ashland City, Tennessee; and Gary (Terri) Deuger of Wake Forrest, North Carolina. There are thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren also surviving. Her brother, Arch McKelvie of Rock Island, Illinois also is surviving. She is preceded in her death by her parents, one sister, Mary Jane Pempeck, and her brother Clyde McKelvie.
 
A funeral service will be on Friday September 23, 2016 at 11:00 am at First Christian Church in Monmouth, Illinois. Her family plans visitation prior to the service from 9:30 am to 11:00 am also at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery in Monmouth, Illinois. Donald R. Owens

Donald R. Owens, 80, of Monmouth, passed away at 8:15 p.m., Monday, September 19, 2016 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg, IL.

He was born on July 3, 1936 in Clinton, IL, the son of Edward and Grace (Crawford) Owens he was raised and educated in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School in 1954. He earned his Associates Degree in Fire Science from Carl Sandburg College. He also served in the United States Army from 1961-1965.

Don married Barbara Perrin on June 14, 1964 at the Methodist Church in Monmouth, IL, she survives.

Don worked as a Fireman at Monmouth Fire Department from 1969 until 1990 when he retired as Assistant Chief. He and Barb moved to Greeley, CO for three years. Don was a member of the Heritage United Presbyterian Church, he owned Owen’s Collection Agency, and was co-owner of D&T Gun Shop both of Monmouth. His hobbies included hunting and fishing.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother; Terry Owens, his sister; Sharon Ballard, and two infant children; Kevin Owens and Donald Owens Jr.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 26, 2016 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Cremation rites have been accorded. Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Monmouth Fire Department or Heritage United Presbyterian Church.

Everett E. “Gene” McGlaughlin

James L. Willis

James L. Willis, 70, of Roseville, IL passed away Monday September 19, 2016, 10:50 a.m. at the Heartland Healthcare Center Galesburg, IL.  He was born Monday July 8, 1946, in Macomb, IL the son of James F. and Eileen B. (Birdsall) Willis.

Those left to cherish his memory are daughter Kimberly Pearce; grandchildren Charles and Bradley Pearce, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters (Betty Schisler, Beverly Goff and Sandy Campagna).

After graduation James went in the military.  He served in the US Army from 1966-1968 during the Vietnam Conflict.  He owned and operated Jim’s Barbershop and worked construction doing window repairs.

Cremation rites have been accorded, graveside service will be Friday September 30, 2016, 1:00 p.m. at the Salem Cemetery Roseville, IL, with a celebration of life to follow at Homers House Roseville, IL.  Memorials may be made in his memory.  Wise Family Hoover Hall Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Erika Grace Fridenbergs

Erika Grace Fridenbergs, 21, passed from this earth to her heavenly home on September
14, 2016 in Chicago. She will live on in the hearts of her family and friends who loved
her very much.
Erika was born in Chicago on April 2, 1995 to Gary Fridenbergs and Catherine
Youngquist. She is survived by her parents, Cathy Youngquist of Chicago and Gary and
Jeanette Fridenbergs of Glenview, Illinois; two brothers, Charlie and Will Fridenbergs of
Glenview; and her grandparents, Jane Inness Youngquist of Galesburg, Illinois and Gene
and Nancy Youngquist of Cameron, Illinois. She had dozens of loving aunts, uncles, and
cousins on both sides of her family. She was preceded in death by her paternal
grandparents, Harry Fridenbergs and Shirley Beauclair; her great aunt and namesake,
Erika Turks; a cousins, Jordan Butler and Dylan Edler.
Erika graduated from Glenbrook High School in Glenview and attended college at the
University of Missouri, Santa Monica College, and Oakton College (Chicago). She was
enrolling in classes to become a medical assistant.
Her short life was filled with lots of adventure as she loved to travel with her parents.
Travels took her to her absolute favorite place, Maui, many times, to Latvia to visit her
father’s family, to Italy, France and Mexico, and to Nicaragua, where she worked in a
medical facility with underprivileged children. She also had a love of art, writing, and
photography.
Erika was filled with laughter and love and will always be known as a free spirit, an
adventurer, and a giver. When her life came to an end, she was able to donate her organs
and give the ultimate gift of life to three people.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Cameron Christian Church in Cameron,
Illinois on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 6 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Nielson officiating. A
time of fellowship, including refreshments, will follow at the church. A celebration will
also take place at Gilson Park Beach in Wilmette, Illinois, where she lifeguarded for three
years, on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 2p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider

John Frederick “Fred” Johnson

John Frederick “Fred” Johnson, 92 of Little York, IL passed away Tuesday September 20, 2016, 8:45 at Monmouth Nursing Home.  He was born Sunday December 16, 1923 in Little York, IL the son of Einar and Hilda (Fredrickson) Johnson.  He married Bonna J. Parrish on February 19, 1950 in Monmouth, IL.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Bonna Johnson of Little York, IL; Children Janice (Greg) Hamberg of Little York, IL, Ronald (Jeanine) Johnson of Eldon, MO; Grandchildren DeAnna (Mark) McCurdy of Alexis, IL, Amber (John) Kustermann of Denver, CO, Christina Johnson of Hillsdale, IL, Johnathan Johnson of Monmouth, IL as well as 4 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters (Anna Johnson and Evelyn Ladwig), son (Larry Johnson) and grandson (Nicholas Johnson).

Fred farmed in the Little York area all of his life.  He graduated from Little York High School and two years at Brown’s Business College.  Fred served in the Illinois National Guard during WWII for two years.   He worked on golf courses in Florida and Aledo, IL.   He worked for the city of Monmouth, and worked at Walmart in Galesburg, IL.  Fred loved to hunt small game, ducks and deer.  He especially enjoyed fishing in Minnesota at Cedar Lake and Lake Kabetogama at International Falls.

Adeline Hurt

Adeline Hurt, age 86, of Oquawka, Illinois; passed away at her residence on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 7:00 am. Adeline was born on August 22, 1930 in Oquawka, Illinois, the daughter of James Benjamin and Mary Alta (Reese) Sells. She was reared and educated in Oquawka, attending Oquawka High School. On July 27, 1969, Adeline married Ervin Blaine Hurt in Kewanee, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on April 19, 2005. She was previously married to Melvin Spangler on August 27, 1947 in Oquawka, IL. Adeline was a homemaker. Adeline loved to knit, crochet, quilt, attended Bingo, and work crossword puzzles. She was know by her family as a "Professional Babysitter" as she loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Adeline is survived by sons and daughters; Rodger (Michelle) Spangler of Dekalb, MS, Bonnie Spangler of Oquawka, IL, Carol Tomson of Junction City, KS, David (Mary Kay) Spangler of Cambridge, IL, Nancy (Dennis) Brooks of Monmouth, IL, Brenda (Reuben) Randolph of Galesburg, IL, Roger (Ruth) Hurt of Oquawka, IL, Gale (Nina) Hurt of Oquawka, IL, Joyce Romine of Monmouth, IL, one sister, Mary Chambers of Del City, OK, twenty-nine grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters; Edith Oertel, Eva Price, twin Pearl Utterback, Mabel Reeder, brothers; Lawrence (Curly) Sells, Ernest (Hank) Sells, Benjamin Sells, one infant daughter, Corrin, daughter Mary Eva (Hurt) Barnes, son-in-law Ken Tomson, and her grandson David B. Joan L. Deuger, age 84, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 7:00 am on Sunday September 18, 2016 at her Monmouth residence.

Joan Lee Hotchkiss

Mrs. Joan Lee Hotchkiss, 88, formerly of Knoxville, Illinois, died at 11:33 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 in Galesburg Cottage hospital.

She was born July 3, 1928 in Elgin, Illinois the daughter of Virgil B. and Zehra (Rotnour) Felter. She married Morton L. Hotchkiss on September 2, 1948 at the Methodist Church in Antioch, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 15, 2007.

Surviving are her two daughters, Debra (Wayne) Mastin of Knoxville and Shawna (Gary) Lorenz of Huntley, Illinois; three grandchildren, Kylee (Mark) Simpson, Kane Mastin, and Megan (Brock) Rady; and three great granddaughters, Sydnee and Harper Simpson and Danika Rady.

Joan graduated from Antioch High School in 1946 and from Knox College in 1950, the same year she and her husband moved from Wataga to Knoxville. She began her teaching career in 1950 as an employee of Knoxville Community Unit District #202 and retired in 1985 from the district after 28 years during that period.

A former member of Chapter AM, P.E.O., she served six years on the Board of Trustees of the Illinois P.E.O. Home, was a charter member of the Knoxville School Foundation, was a member of the Board of Directors of Knox County Historic Sites, a member of Knox County Retired Teachers’ Association, and a member of the Knox College Alumni Council, where she served four years as secretary and a number of years on the Knox Fund Steering Committee.

She was a charter member of the Friends of the Knox County Home, serving three years as its first president. She also served as a Knox County Jury Commissioner from 1995-2010 and for a brief period as a member of the Knoxville City Council, appointed by the mayor to fill an unexpired term.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, the Knox Fifty Year Club, writing numerous articles for their BULLETIN, a member of Pi Beta Phi and its Galesburg Alumnae Club, a member of Siwash Sisters’ Book Club, and a member of the Knox County Humane Society, for which she served many years as corresponding secretary.

In 2002, at Homecoming Convocation, she received a Knox College Service Award, in the same year she was chosen Volunteer of the Year for the Knox County Nursing Home, and later inducted into the Gallery of Ageless Achievers sponsored by the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging. In 2008, she received the Knox College Fifty Year Club Scroll of Honor.

Cremation will be accorded. Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016 in First United Methodist Church. Pastor Mary Runge will officiate. The family will greet friends at a luncheon following the service. Jaden Carter Lester

Jaden Carter Lester age 6 of Galesburg, Ill., died Thursday September 15, 2016 at 4:23 a.m. at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born May 25, 2010 in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Rickie Lester and Jessica Woolsey.

He is survived by his parents Jessica and Rickie, his paternal grandmother Vickie Lester, brother Cadence Johnson, sister Jordan Lester, Uncle Asa and Kara Woolsey, Uncle Robert Lester, and Uncle Jeremy and Toby Lester, Aunt Shelly and Joe Mitchell , Grandma Sheri Yelm and his adopted grandparents Edie and Oletha Wallace.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Norman Lester, and maternal grandparents Carter and Kristie Woolsey.

Jaden was a student at Steele School where he was a Super Star. The four things he loved was 1. Food, 2. Bikes, 3. Meeting and helping people, and 4. “Oh yes” his mom and dad (According to Jaden). He knew everyone in the neighborhood and sometime crashed a few parties. He always told his parents that when he grew up he wanted to get married, have a boy and a girl, a dog and a cat, and wanted to go to the moon.

Jaden was very inquisitive and question everything. He will be missed and never forgotten.

Brooke Marie Holford

Brooke Marie Holford, 35, of Holly Hill, FL, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday September 11, 2016 at her residence. Brooke was born on October 14, 1980 in Burlington, Iowa. She moved with her family to the Palm Coast area in 1994. In 1998, Brooke graduated from Flagler Palm Coast High School. She was currently employed as a Database Administrator for Emergency Communications Network in Ormond Beach where she has been employed for the last 15 years. Brooke loved playing darts, disc golfing, and kayaking. She also loved Universal Studios and traveling. Most of all Brooke loved her family and her friends. She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. Survivors include her Mother, Dana J. Holford of Palm Coast, FL; Father, Mark (Vickie) Holford of Gladstone, IL; Two sisters, Sarah (Coby) Taylor of Ormond Beach and Lindsey Cokel of CA; Boyfriend, Dan Deegan of Holly Hill; Maternal Grandmother, Joyce Meloan of Gladstone, IL; Paternal Grandmother, Mildred Holford of Stronghurst, IL and Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Ruth M. Simpson

Ruth Marion Finley Simpson age 96, of Oneida, died on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in her home. Ruth was born on the 26th of April, in 1920.

Ruth`s parents were Clifford L. Finley and Nellie Mae Watson.

Ruth was married to Roy Simpson in 1934. Ruth worked at the Galesburg Mental Health Hospital for 26 years. She started working there in 1958 as a Technician 3.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Hugh Simpson, brother, Wayne Watson Finley, and granddaughter Annamarie Ruth Simpson Whitehead

Ruth is survived by her two children, daughter, Margaret Ruth Flickinger of Galesburg, Illinois (husband Donald) and son, David Leroy Simpson (wife Tita) of Georgia. Grandchildren, Debra Flickinger Pfab (husband Steve), Julie Flickinger Kellie (husband John), Anthony Wayne Simpson and Shannon Brian Simpson. Great- grandchildren, Marc Simpson, Amanda Simpson and Brittney Simpson. Nephew and Nieces Larry S. Finley, Alice D. Call, Marion Underwood, and Anna M. Love. Along with many other beloved family members throughout Illinois and surrounding states.

Ruth was under the care of OSF Hospice Western Region, the loving care of family members, and her dear friend Shelli. She also had support and comfort from her companion dogs BB Ruth Simpson Taylor and BT Simpson.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Saint Aloysius Catholic Church in Wataga, Illinois at 5:00 PM. Father Deus-Dadit Byabato will be officiating. Helene Isabel Reedy Enderlin

Helene Isabel Reedy Enderlin, 103, of Madison, WI, formerly of Galesburg, died at 10:44 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Capital Lakes Skilled Nursing, Madison, WI.
Helene was born in Stronghurst Illinois October 31, 1912, the daughter of William and Ellen Ryan Reedy. Helene was raised on a farm in rural Stronghurst and attended four years of high school in Monmouth, Illinois. After graduation in 1930, she was employed by Illinois Banker’s Life Insurance Company in Monmouth until marriage to her soulmate, James Jerome Enderlin of Alexis, on October 17, 1934. They lived in Alexis for five years before moving to their farm near Rio where they resided for 55 years. They were married for 67 years and were best friends and best supports for each other through their long and happy marriage until Jim’s death in 2002.
Helene is survived by two daughters, Janice Enderlin of Galesburg Illinois, Sharon Lampe (Ronald) of Monona Wisconsin; three grandsons, James Lampe (Katherine), Richard Lofgren (Margaret), Douglass Lampe (Jacqueline); and 3 great-grandchildren, Tierney Lofgren, Sean Lofgren and Anika Lampe. Her only surviving sibling is her youngest sister, Jeanne (Martin) Maher of Galesburg Illinois.
She was preceded in death by family members: husband James Enderlin; daughter, Carole Elaine McKnight; parents William and Ellen Reedy; sister, Marie Strandberg; brother William Reedy; infant sister, Frances and many beloved nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Helene and Jim did everything together during their long marriage. They owned a ceramics business and provided lessons for ten years; grew and sold over 200 varieties of hybrid iris; volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society for 15 years. She was president of the Rio Women’s and Junior Women’s Clubs. Helene had a life-long love of reading history, economics, philosophy, politics and music. Over the years, Helene collected many books of poetry and took composition courses to instruct her writing projects. She loved listening to all types of music, especially opera and classical music. Travel was very important to Helene and Jim and they made sure that their daughters had multiple opportunities to travel throughout the United States and Europe. They traveled internationally, also: Italy, Austria, Germany, Ireland and France. Throughout her life she worked on genealogy of the family and has provided a trove of information for the following generations with a rich background of their ancestry, including a great deal of anecdotal data.
Helene lived a very long and full life. She was dedicated throughout her life to provide the richest experience possible for her children and grandchildren. Further, her generosity and support was given to all people in need, as evidenced by a life-time of service to others.
The Rosary will be prayed at 11 a.m. Monday September 19, 2016 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Alexis, IL. The funeral mass will follow at 12 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Alexis, IL. Marilyn F. Presley

 Marilyn F. Presley, age 77 of rural Galesburg, Illinois, passed away at 8:52 a.m. Wednesday
September 14, 2016 at her home. She was born November 9, 1938 in LaHarpe, the daughter of David Lee and Myrtle Catherine Shutwell Fife. On June 5, 1957, she married Herbert E. Johnson in Blandinsville, IL. He preceded her in death on September 23, 1983. On June 17, 1989, she married Carl D. Presley in Abingdon, IL.

Mrs. Presley attended Fountain Green, Illinois Grade School and graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1957. She then attended Carl Sandburg College. She was employed at Maytag in Galesburg for 18 years, retiring in 1998. She also worked for Dekalb Company in Monmouth for 3 years She enjoyed hunting, fishing, rock collecting, traveling, gardening and raising flowers. She was a member of the East Galesburg Community Chapel.

Survivors include her husband, Carl, one son, Larry (Linda) Johnson of Monmouth, IL, two daughters, Sandra (Larry) Waddell and Janette Curtis, both of Monmouth, six, stepchildren, several grandchildren and step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren, and two sisters, Margaret (Lyle) Oliver of Cantrall, IL, and Norma Jean (Tucker) Heckenkamp of Quincy, IL. She was preceded in death by her first husband, parents and one sister, Carolyn Hasten. And one brother in law, Lyle Oliver.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday September 17, 2016 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, with Rev. Milton Marquith officiating. Burial will follow in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Visitation is from 1:00 p.m. Saturday until time of services at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the East Galesburg Community Chapel.
