Thomas E. Nees

Thomas E. Nees, 71, of Monmouth, IL died at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at his home.

Tom was born May 8, 1945 in Charleston, IL the son of William Rufus and Martha Elizabeth (Walker) Nees.  He attended Monmouth and Yorkwood Schools.

Tom was a Private First Class with the United States Army serving in Panama.

Tom married Cindy S. Young on August 3, 1973 in Monmouth and she survives.

He had a long career, over 25 years, with the City of Monmouth and then Environmental Management before retiring in 2006.  After retiring he had 10 great years of spending time with his family and friends.

Following his retirement, Tom enjoyed playing dice, cards, playing pool every week and on warm days he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and spending time with his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy; 3 daughters, Lisa (Larry) Willett of Monmouth, Bobbi (Chad Deakin) Nees of Monmouth, and Sara (Jason Carlson) Nees of Viola, IL; his grandchildren, Mirika Hornke, Nicholas Hornke, Alec Klingler, Bryce Willett, Dalton Willett, Rhett Willett, Derek Nees, Sophia Carlson and Jacob Carlson; great grandchildren, Aiden, Mason and Madilynn; and his sister, Sally Johnson of Rantoul, IL

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kimberly Nees; his sister, Linda Lee Fye and lifelong friend, Keith Henry.

Tom’s family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Frank Lasala for his outstanding care, friendship and compassion during Tom’s illness.

Donald R. Overton Sr.

Donald R. Overton Sr. 96, of Galesburg, IL formerly of Avon, IL passed away at 5:55 AM Monday December 26, 2016 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center. He was born on March 30, 1920 in Iowa to Albert and Allabelle (Pence) Overton. He married Clara E. Prokes on April 7, 1941 in Chicago, IL. She preceded him in death on July 22, 2008.
He is survived by 4 children, Diane (Marion) Stuckey of London Mills, IL; Olinda (Bob) Lewis of London Mills, IL; Luann Day of Canton, IL; Donald Overton Jr. of London Mils, IL; several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two sisters.
Donald honorably served in the United States Air Force during World War II.

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Shunick

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Shunick, 79, lifetime resident of Galesburg, Illinois, went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 26, 2017 at 1:27 a.m. in Peoria, Illinois after a courageous battle with cancer. 

Betty was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and a friend to many who will miss her dearly.  Elizabeth is reunited in heaven with her husband, Robert Shunick and her two sisters and their husbands, Martha (Tom) Caldwell and Mary (Dave) Lukens. 

Betty was born in Galesburg to Charles and Mattie (Fleener) Trusch on April 15, 1937.  She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1955 and then attended Brown’s Business College.  She married Robert M. Shunick on February 15, 1958 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Galesburg.  At 12 years old, she started her first job as a car hop at Parkway Drive Inn.  She was also employed at Gale Products, St. Mary Medical Center, Cottage Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital, and finally retired from St. Francis Medical Center.  She loved holding the annual South Street Neighborhood Watch Block Party each summer for the children in her neighborhood.  She enjoyed ceramics and sitting on her front porch in the warm Illinois summers.  Nothing pleased her more than helping others.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Sheila Shunick and Leslie Moore, both of Galesburg and son, Matthew (Alexandra) Shunick of Gainesville, Florida.  Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life.  She leaves behind five grandchildren, Char Shunick, Tearyll Shunick, Elizabeth Shunick, Nicholas Shunick, and Addisyn Shunick.  She also leaves behind six great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father William Miller officiating.  Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.  Online condolences may be made at http://www.h-p-w.com/.

Phyllis I. Ross

Phyllis I. Ross, 90, of Carbondale, IL formerly of Roseville, IL passed away at 5:35 PM Thursday December 22, 2016 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was born on December 10, 1926 in Ponemah, IL to Cloyd R. and Mae B. (Ford) Miller. She married Chester Wayne Ross on November 2, 1945 in Macomb, IL. He preceded her in death on November 19, 1990.
She is survived by her son Merlyn Wayne (Loretta Ann) Ross of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter-in-law Jeanine (Randy Evans) Ross of Herrin, IL; five grandchildren, Mark (Sarah) Ross, Mike (Liz) Ross, Amber (Jason) Shiparski, Ian Ross and Chris Ross; one step-grandson Jake Evans ; 8 great-grandchildren Alex, Damien, Trinity, Hailey, Katlyn, Landon, Amber and Mckinley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one son Howard Eugene Ross. She attended Rayburn Grade School before graduating from Roseville High School. Chester and Phyllis moved to Carbondale in 1982 and resided at Prairie Living of Chatauqua.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday December 28, 2016 at the Asbury Cemetery. Pastor Jim Eddy will officiate. Memorial contributions can be made to the Carbondale Park District. James J. Schreck

James J. Schreck, 80, of Monmouth, IL passed away at 3:50 P.M. Sunday, December 25, 2016 at the Roseville Rehabilitation and Care Center, Roseville, IL.

He was born May 24, 1936 in Macomb, IL the son of Carl Benjamin and F. Helen (St. Ledger) Schreck. He was raised and educated in the Greenbush area, graduating from Avon High School.

Jim married Shirley Clark on December 1, 1956 in Oelwein, Iowa and she survives.

Jim began serving with the Illinois National Guard in 1954 until 1996. His last 24 years from 1972-1996 he served full time obtaining the rank of Warrant Officer, W-4.

Jim also worked as a carpenter for Lee Vail from 1953-1958 and John Sheridan from 1958- 1972.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Monmouth, Monmouth Knights of Columbus, a lifetime Monmouth American Legion Post #136 and was a member of the Honor Squad for the last 9 years, the NRA, and he was a lifetime member of the Military Officers Association.

Jim enjoyed golfing, camping, woodworking, farming and carpentry work. He loved spending time with his family, going to his grandchildren’s many school and athletic events along with traveling when the opportunity arose. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and Notre Dame righting Irish fan.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Schreck of Monmouth; 5 children, Michael Schreck, Joseph (Jayne) Schreck, Jean (Jeff) Haase and Timothy (Brenda) Schreck all of Monmouth and Judy (Eric) Hart of Roseville; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, John (Janet) Schreck of Roseville; sisters, Mary Ann Liggett of Las Vegas, NV and Eileen (Ed) Roe of Monmouth; several nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Schreck; infant sister, Theresa Schreck and brother in law, Jerry Liggett.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2016 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Monmouth. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Monmouth. Visitation will Thursday, December 29, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 pm at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth with a Rosary Services beginning at 5:00 pm. Donald H. White

Donald H. White, 92, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 7:25 p.m. Thursday December 22, 2016 in the Heartland Heath Care Center, Galesburg.

He was born on October 4, 1924 in Elmira, New York to Donald B. and Erma Kase White. He married Billie Jean Beattie in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 9, 1950. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2010.

Don is survived by a daughter-in-law, Lynnette White of Washington, Illinois; three granddaughters, Kim (Joe) Frans and Megan (Nick) Brent, both of Washington, and Rev. Annie (Lucas) Ladnier of Ellsworth, Wisconsin; and five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Beckett Timothy Frans, Harrison, Dashiell and Finley Brent. Also surviving are Don's grandsons, Andrew & Nick Elders of Galesburg; Don's "adopted" daughter Carol Dilks of Bloomington, Indiana and Don's goddaughter Lindsay Huffman of Tiffin, Ohio. Don was preceded in death by his son, Timothy L. White, on April 14, 2007.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to John & Cindy Robertson, Dee Quinn and Jean Gummerson for the years of support, friendship & comfort they provided for Don. 

He owned and operated Don White Oil Service for 30 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a 1942 graduate of Kenmore (NY) High School and a 1947 graduate of Cornell University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.

Don was a member and former president of the Galesburg Lions Club. He also was a recipient of a Melvin Jones Fellowship and the Galesburg club’s “Lion of the Year.” He was a member and former president of the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Central Congregational Church where he sang in the choir and served as chairperson of the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees. He also served as a volunteer at Galesburg Cottage Hospital and on the board of Christmas in Action.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2016 at Central Congregational Church with Rev. Dr. Sterrett Collins and Rev. Annie Ladnier officiating. Shirley J. Wilson

Shirley J. Wilson, 78, of Cameron, died at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at home.

She was born March 21, 1938, in Elmwood, the daughter of Merle and Leona (Hedden) Morris. She married Wayne D. Wilson on August 20, 1953 in Monmouth. He preceded her in death September 19, 2003.

She is survived by three sons, Wayne E. Wilson of Monmouth, Donald L. Wilson of Galesburg, and Gerald (and Sally) Wilson of Alexis; three daughters, Darlene (and Ray) Pine of Oneida, Sue (and Ron) Taylor of Monmouth, and Lucy Shannon of Galesburg; 13 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; three brothers, John (and Linda) Morris of Havana, Bob (and Charlene) Morris of Wataga, and Ronald (and Cathy) Morris of Manito; and two sisters, Annbelle (and Clarence) Smith of Lewistown and Janice Luster of Easton. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Melvin Wilson on December 11, 1993; a grandson, Matthew Wilson; two great grandsons, Dylan Miller and Hunter Ward; a brother, Donald Morris; and a sister, Marylou Switzer.

Shirley was a homemaker. She loved sewing and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She had been a volunteer at St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Terry Johnston officiating. Lachele A. Stephenson

Lachele AnnMarie Stephenson, age 16, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at her residence on December 23, 2016 at 12:50pm. She was born on August 2, 2000 in Monmouth; and is the daughter of Mayme and Justin Blue. She was raised in Monmouth, where she attended Monmouth Schools and is currently a Sophomore at Monmouth Roseville High School. Lachele wanted to become either a Certified Nurses Assistant or be certified as a Veterinary, as she loved dogs and small animals.  She loved to listen to music, color posters, and paint her nails.  Lachele is survived by her parents, Mayme and Justin Blue of Monmouth, Illinois.  Her brother, Thomas Stephenson, and her Grandmother, Gloria Stephenson, both of Monmouth, Illinois, and her uncle, Robbie Waldorf of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  She is preceded in her death by her grandfather, Toby Stephenson and step-grandfather, Walter Blue. As were her wishes, cremation has been accorded, and a gathering of her family and friends is planned on Friday, December 30th at 11:00 am at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Her family plans to be at the funeral home prior and during the hour to receive their friends.  A memorial fund is being established W.I.A.R. 

LaVeta Jane Kenney

LaVeta Jane Kenney, 89, Galesburg, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016, at 5:53 a.m. at Heartland Health Care Center.  She was born Wednesday, March 30, 1927, in Griggsville, Illinois, the daughter of Vernon K. and Nola (St. John) Baker.  She married Lyle L. Kenney on September 12, 1946 in Alexis, Illinois. 

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 70 years;  four children, Curtis (Mary) Kenney of Durham, North Carolina, Janice (Stan) Taylor of Mountain Home, Arkansas; Carol (and Jim) Brown of Galesburg, Illinois; and Mark (Ruth) Kenney of Alexis, Illinois; 12 grandchildren, Troy (Angie) Kenney, Jenny (Rick) McCutcheon, John (April) Loveridge, Joshua Moore, Emily (Luke) Raymond, Sarah (Jason) Horner, Markus (Julia ) Kenney, Chris Snow, Nick Snow, Jake Kenney, Rachel Kenney, and Jesse Kenney, 16 great-grandchildren, one sister, Thelma Krantz, and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, (Dorothy Alstedt), and one grandchild.

LaVeta was raised and educated in Alexis, Illinois, graduating from Alexis High School in 1945. She was a homemaker and farm wife, raising and caring for her family and working along side her husband until their retirement from farming in 1974.  She enjoyed cooking, reading, sewing, remodeling their home, camping, puzzling, and spending time with her family.  She was a member of the North Henderson United Methodist Church and Alexis Women's Club.

Rosa Lee D. Ogle

Margaret E. Cash

Margaret E. Cash, 84, of Galesburg, died at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2016 in Seminary Manor.

She was born August 8, 1932, in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of F. Clair and Ruth Alice (Melcher) Salter. She married Leo A. Cash on September 3, 1955 in Galesburg.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Leo; three children, Mary (and Doug) Johnson of Dublin, Ohio, Clarke Cash of Riverside, Illinois and Paul (and Amy) Cash of Hinsdale, Illinois; and seven grandchildren, Eric (and Madison), Alex, Elizabeth, Courtney, Patrick, Frances, and Colin.

Margaret graduated from Ft. Madison High School in Ft. Madison, Iowa and Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. She worked at Carl Sandburg College and also for the Knox County Recorder of Deeds. Margaret was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church. She also belonged to PEO Chapter W, Sorosis Club, and D.A.R. She loved antiquing, travel, and her grandchildren.

Visitation will be noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral will follow at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Dick Johnson officiating. Scott Dale Line

Scott Dale Line, 45 of Mason City, Illinois and formerly of London Mills, died early Sunday morning, December 18, 2016 at the scene of an accident on Illinois Route 136 in McLean County.
  He was born May 7, 1971 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg, the son of Dale and Rosemary Myers Line.
  Scott is survived by his parents, Dale and Rosemary Line of rural Hanna City; his children, Tristan Scott Line and Hailey Nichole Line, both of Mason City, Farah Elise Line of Springfield, Daryan Gray Line and Benjamin Gatlin Thorne Line all of Springfield; one sister, Dawn Line of Bushnell; his nephews, Christopher John Beard and Jason Dale Housenga both of Bushnell and Kirsten Liesl Meyer of Macomb; aunts, uncles, cousins and their families.
  He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Irene and Kenneth Line, his maternal grandparents, Dorothy and William H. Myers, an uncle, William J. Myers, an aunt, Tammie Myers and a cousin, Chad Ehrenhart.
  He grew up in the London Mills area and graduated from Valley High School in 1989.  He later attended a Kitchen Restaurant Management School in Davenport, Iowa.  He owned and operated the Some Like It Hot! Restaurant in Mason City for a couple of years.  He currently was employed as an assembler by the Eaton Corporation in Lincoln.  He attended the First Christian Church in Mason City.  He enjoyed motorcycles, hillbilly trucks, 4-wheeling and he was a die-hard Iron Man, Marilyn Monroe and St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan.
  Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 23, 2016 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, 206 N. Washington St. in Abingdon.  Burial will be in East Midway Cemetery near London Mills.  Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.  The family will also be planning a time to celebrate Scott’s life at a later date in Mason City.

Jane Ann McFall Reichel

Jane Ann McFall Reichel, 66, died at her home December 18, 2016. Born July 28, 1950 in Galesburg, she was the loving daughter of John T. and Martha L. Humphrey McFall, lover, friend, and wife to Martin Josef Reichel, whom she married June 12, 1971, and mother to her loving daughter, Paula E. Reichel.

She leaves behind her husband, Martin; daughter, Paula and Paula's husband, Justin Martucci; her sister, Margaret (Peggy) Sperlin and her husband, DeWayne Sperlin; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Hoover, Johanna Schuller, and Anneliese Schaefert; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jane graduated from Costa High School and attended Carl Sandburg College. In earlier years, she worked as a secretary for her father and husband in the family business, McFall Monument Company. She was an avid reader and Galesburg Public Library user and had belonged to the P & V Book Club. Most of all she loved other people and was a faithful friend to many.

She loved to travel and spent four years living in Germany while her husband served in the United States Air Force there, acquiring a working knowledge of German after befriending her landlady, who spoke no English. She was happiest when on the road to visit her daughter whether in Indianapolis, Ithaca, New York, or Washington D.C.

Her home that she built with her husband was designed for entertaining and she knew how to do it better than most, having an eye for detail, a penchant for organization as well as being an excellent cook. She was a long-time member of Sorosis and a former member of PEO and visited with her friends on a regular basis in various Galesburg coffee shops and restaurants.

Cremation will be accorded with later interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, followed by an open house in the home of Jane's sister Peggy, 414 North Academy Street, Galesburg.

Marianna M. Seitz

Marianna M. Seitz, 90, of Knoxville, Illinois died at 3:25 am Wednesday, December 21, 2016 in Knox County Nursing Home.

She was born February 20, 1926 in Joslin, Illinois the daughter of Leland and Jessie Wells Nesbit. She married Harry Allen McOlgan in 1949 in Iowa. She then married Charles Anderson and later married Homer Don Seitz in 1980 in St. Louis, Missouri. He preceded her in death in 2006.

She is survived by two sons, Gregg (Debbie) McOlgan of Springfield, Illinois and Kevin McOlgan of Forest Park, Illinois; her daughter, Susan (Ted) Behrens of Galesburg; three cousins, Marian Harkness of DeWitt, Iowa, Priscilla Green of Little Rock, Arkansas and Lynn Nesbit of New York City, New York; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one daughter, Kathy Kay in 2013.

Marianna worked as a social worker for the State of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services from 1967-1995. She graduated from Oquawka High School in 1944 and was valedictorian of her class. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Marianna loved her children, her grandchildren and all her friends. She enjoyed collecting Fiestaware.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00 am Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church. Pastor Mary Runge will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 am Tuesday at the church. Cremation will be accorded following the services. Burial will be in Biggsville Cemetery at a later date. Jeffrey L. Garrett

Jeffrey L. Garrett, 58, of Little York, IL passed away Tuesday December 20, 2016, 9:25 a.m. at his home.  He was born Tuesday April 15, 1958, in Galesburg, IL the son of Billie and Betty (Hainline) Garrett.  He married Nancy Cash on August 23, 1994 and later divorced in 2006.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother Betty; children Paige Garrett of Alexis, IL, and Drew Garrett of Little York, IL; two brothers Dan Garrett of Gerlaw, IL, and Howard Garrett of Monmouth, IL.  He was preceded in death by his father and 1 sister.

He coached baseball, basketball, and football.  He wasn’t afraid of hard work and loved his family.  He always wanted to do the best he could for his children as they were his life.

Wayne Harley Lepard

Wayne Harley Lepard age 52 of Galesburg, Illinois went home to be with the Lord Saturday December 17, 2016 at 8:27 p.m.
Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Friday December 23, 2016 at Northwoods Community Church with Jeremie Kilgore officiating.

Eilleen Elsie Spoerl

Eilleen Elsie Spoerl, age 59, of Monmouth, Illinois, died peacefully by slipping away and going to sleep at 11:00 PM on Monday, December 19, 2016 at Royal Oaks Nursing Home in Kewanee, Illinois. She was born on September 14, 1957 in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Peter R. and Shirley J. (Beard) Ausmus. Eilleen attended school in Peoria, IL and Monmouth, IL. On August 27, 2002, Eilleen married David E. Spoerl in Monmouth, Illinois is he is surviving. Eilleen worked at Warren Achievement Center in Monmouth and worked many jobs there. She participated in Special Olympics as a track runner. Eilleen loved to ride her bike, music, birds, fish, rabbits, and all animals. She like to listen to music; rock, country, and Elvis Presley. She, as her husband David said, "was a bingo freak" and played whenever she could. Eilleen is survived by her husband David of Monmouth, IL, one son, David Stotler of Arkansas, and her beloved dog, Lacey. She is preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, and one sister.
A memorial service is planned for 10:30 AM on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, Illinois. Cremation is being accorded. Interment will be in Monmouth Cemetery. Jeanne Rowe, 72, McClusky, ND formerly of Knoxville, IL died Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, ND.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 11th, on her birthday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Union Bar and Grill in McClusky.

Graveside services will be in December in Galesburg, IL.

She grew up in Illinois and attended Galesburg High School. She enjoyed cheerleading and hanging out with her best friend Patricia Sparks. She attended Bradley University and then graduated from Southern Illinois University. She married Jeff Woolsey and they had two daughters. She enjoyed being self employed as a wholesale florist, and many other home businesses that allowed her to also be a homemaker. Her favorite time of year was in the fall when she would travel back to Illinois with her cousin Jeanine Lee to research family history and enjoy the autumn foliage. She was passionate about researching genealogy, so much so that her daughter nicknamed her study "Jeanneology". She loved all animals, especially her two kitties Pandee and Patches.

Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Lauri Logsdon of McClusky and beloved granddaughter Kassidee Logsdon.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her father Eli "Red" Rowe, her mother Irene "Betty" Rowe, her daughter Kris Woolsey; granddaughter, Riley Logsdon.

Danny LaVerne Thurman

Danny LaVerne Thurman was born on October 21, 1937 in Avon, IL to his parents LaVerne and Martha (Shumaker) Thurman.  He passed away on December 6, 2016 in Cape Coral, FL at the age of 79. 

Danny is survived by his loving wife of 57  years, Geraldine M. (Kreiger) Thurman; children Jama of Ft. Myers, FL., Stephen (Julie Nussmeier) of Brimfield, IL., Michael (Tammy Taggart) of Cape Coral, FL.; grandchildren Nicole, Connor, Stephanie, and Logan; and his sister Sharron of Galesburg, IL.

Dan worked several years in marine construction and then for 35 years at Caterpillar, Inc. where he retired as a Staff Engineer in 1997.  He served on the Technical Division Board and on the Board of Directors of the American Gear Manufacturers Association.  He also represented the United States as their delegate to the International Standards Association, Technical Committee 32.  He served as chairman of several other US gear and spline technical committees and was a Technical Editor for Gear Technology magazine.

Dan was an alderman on the Peoria, IL City Council from 1969-1973.
After retiring, he and his wife moved to Franklin, NC where they spent their summers, and to Cape Coral, FL. where they spent their winters.  He loved fishing, boating and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Lyon’s Cemetery in Fulton County, IL. In lieu of flowers you may make a donation to the National Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org), The Michael J. Sarah V. (Mendoza) Zimmerman, 91, of Galesburg, died at 9:10 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2016 at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.
Sarah was born on June 14, 1925 in San Antonio, TX the daughter of Hilario and Josephine Vergara Mendoza. Sarah is survived by three sons, Sam Albert of Abingdon, Oria E. Wright, III of Ft. Myers, FL, and William H. Wright of Galesburg; two daughters, Patricia (Ben) Forsyth Voss of Victoria and Barbara ( Tom) Wright Ennis of Galesburg; one sister, Mary Mendoza Trahan of Lafayette, LA; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Zimmerman; one son, Benjamin Wright on August 31, 2013; three brothers, Alex, Joseph, and Hilario; and one sister, Dorothy Rico.
Sarah worked for several years at the Galesburg Research Hospital. However, her main role was mother and homemaker. She loved raising her children, and supporting her grandchildren. They were her life. Sarah also had a deep love for dancing and reading. She also enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and fishing.

Arthur “Arty” Hugh Turner, Jr.

Arthur “Arty” Hugh Turner, Jr., 58, of Abingdon, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016 at his home.
  He was born June 27, 1958, in Galesburg, the son of Arthur Hugh and Cecil Lee Chaney Turner, Sr.
  Arty is survived by his life partner, Sherry S. Jones Bent; his children, Jaclyn Jones of Abingdon, Teri Bent of Abingdon, Jonathan Bent of Clearwater, Florida, and Stephanie (Fiancé, Joshua Nelson) Bent of Galesburg; his grandchildren Marquita, Khadijah, Arthur, Nevaeh, Jamal, and Emmanual; his siblings, Phillip Turner of Des Moines, Iowa, Cynthia Edmonson of Abingdon, Margaret Turner of Surprise, Arizona, Robin Turner of Peoria, Leslie Turner of Abingdon, and Janet Turner of Abingdon.  He is also survived by Sherry’s mother, Linda Bent and family, and several nieces and nephews and their families.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother in-law Dean Edmonson and Sherry’s father, James Bent.
  He had lived in Abingdon all of his life.  He attended Abingdon schools and participated on the high school track team for two years.  He was a general laborer.  He enjoyed taking care of his grandkids. In his early years, he attended the Congregational Church and currently attended First Assembly of God in Abingdon.  His hobbies included, fishing, cooking fried chicken, cleaning his Monte Carlo, hanging with family and friends, road riding, mushroom hunting (although he was scared of snakes), bowling, playing the drums and enjoying a cold beer.
  Cremation will be accorded.  Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, December23, 2016 at the Abingdon Cemetery.  Rev. Russ Witkowski will officiate.  Family and friends are invited to join in a celebration of Arty’s life from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Rip Rack Lanes, 409 S. Western Ave. in Abingdon. Michael G. DeWitt

Michael G. DeWitt, 71, of Galesburg, Illinois, died 1:30 a.m. Monday, December 19, 2016 at Unity Point Methodist Hospital, Peoria, Illinois.

He was born October 6, 1945 in Galesburg to Gerald O. and Dolores Potter DeWitt. He married Sandra Boelkes September 14, 1968 in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Michelle DeWitt of Oneida, Illinois, Monica Landon of Abingdon and Jennifer Lane of Abingdon, a brother, Gregory “Pat” (and Pauline) DeWitt of Galesburg, a sister, Linda Craig of Ottawa, Illinois, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Valerie DeWitt.

Mike graduated from Galesburg High School in 1963. He graduated from Carl Sandburg College in 1981. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1965 to 1967 in the Truck Company, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd FSR. He worked for the Selective Service, Draft Board for two years. He worked for Galesburg Mental Health Center for 12 years and then Galesburg Sheet Metal for eight years. He worked as an Assistant Director in Building Services at Galesburg Cottage Hospital for 13 years. He worked for Midstate Manufacturing Company as a 2nd sift foreman for two years. He was the Assistant Chief Engineer for Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois for six years and retired in 2008. He later worked for Yemm Chevrolet for several years and retired from there. He was a life member of First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. He was also a member of the Galesburg Motorcycle Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post #285 where he was an officer for many years. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #2257 and was the Commander for four years. He was the coordinator and participant for the Color Guard Services. He enjoyed hot rods, Harleys and fixing anything. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His wife, Sandy was his best friend.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 23, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Mike Lummis will officiate. Mary F. Westfall

Mary F. Westfall, 84, of Galesburg, Illinois, died at 9:10 A.M. on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois.

She was born on July 13, 1932 Wataga, Illinois the daughter of George and Dorothy Steele Kunkle. She married Russell Oris Westfall on June 21, 1952 in Galesburg, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 12, 2008

She attended and graduated from Galesburg High School, Class of 1950. She was a homemaker and a Care Giver. Mary was a member of the Wataga Congregational Church, but attended Four-Square Baptist in Galesburg, Illinois. She was a member of the Wataga Senior Citizens Club. Mary loved flowers and gardening, going to the River Boat and she also enjoyed metal detecting.

Mary is survived by her children, Russell O. (Vicki Smith) Westfall Jr. of Wataga, Illinois and Marlene F. (Randy) Schoonover of Rushville, Illinois; four grandchildren, Bob Bewley of Henderson, Illinois, Jeri Lynn (Barry) Maulden of Knoxville, Illinois Brandy Simer of East Peoria, Illinois and Jason Hoke of Macomb, Illinois; eight great-grandchildren, Allyson, Nicholas, Justice, Brianna, Kylie, Zach, Tanner and Hannah; one great-great-grandchild, Kayson; Siblings, Patty Scott of Galesburg, Illinois and Richard (Pat) Kunkle of Knoxville, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son; Roger Lee, one brother; Ronnie and one sister; Sandy Newman.

Glen G. Hoffman

Glen G. Hoffman, 89, of Galesburg, died at 6:44 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016 in the Knox County Nursing Home.

He was born May 2, 1927, in Galesburg, the son of Ted L. and Pearl I. (Terpening) Hoffman. He married Shirley L. Stegall on June 27, 1947 in Piggot, Arkansas. She preceded him in death November 8, 2011.

He is survived by two daughters, Penny G. (Charles) Burdette of Knoxville and Patricia S. “Patty” (Jerry) Pierce of Springdale, Arkansas; a son, Glen R. “Rusty” (Robin) Hoffman of Springdale, Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Ann) Hoffman of Jacksonville, Illinois; and two sisters, Katherine “Kate” Kelley of Knoxville and Martha (Jerry) Anderson of Galesburg. In addition to his wife, Glen was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael G. Hoffman in 2001; two brothers; and a sister.

Glen was a retired truck driver of 40 years. He had worked for W.A. Jordan, Burlington Truck Lines, and Central Steel and Wire of Chicago. He also was real estate broker.

Glen graduated from Galesburg High School and earned his real estate license through Carl Sandburg College. Glen and Shirley wintered in Texas for many years camping. Glen enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, woodcarving, working puzzles, square dancing, and spending time with his family.

Glen served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947 during World War II. He was a surgical technician stationed in Germany.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Rev. Jim Ecklund will officiate and military honors will be provided by VFW 2257/Legion 285 Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Connie S. West, 76, of Galesburg, Illinois died 5:50 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.  She was born May 20, 1940 in Bonne Terre, Missouri to Harold H. and Grace Mae Shirley Curtis.  She married Timothy West December 22, 1979 in Galesburg.  He survives.
 
Also surviving are two sons, Harold W. Ennis of Galesburg and John W. (and Michelle) Ennis of Galesburg, a daughter, Paula L. (and Charles Luallen) Frazier of North Henderson, Illinois, two brothers, Herbert Curtis of Galesburg and Lurman W. (and Christine) Curtis of Mendon, Illinois, five sisters, Patsy Usher of Missouri, Jean Curtis of Missouri, Phylis Simpson of Galesburg, Barb Asher of Galesburg and Virginia Gaylord of Galesburg, seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters
 
Connie was a homemaker.  She also provided child care at the Knox County Day Nursery and later in her home for 35 years.  She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Brian Turner Hoffmann

Brian Turner Hoffmann, 73, passed away December 13, 2016 at his home in Avon, Illinois. Brian was born on August 8th, 1943 in Peoria, Illinois to Noel and Neva Hoffmann. 

Brian grew up in rural Trivoli, Illinois and graduated from Farmington High School in 1961. After high school, Brian attended Wentworth Military Academy for two years before graduating from the University of Wyoming with a bachelors degree in Animal Science and Masters in Wool.   While in college, Brian married his high school sweetheart, Paula Ann Scapecchi. After graduation, they moved to Denver, Colorado where Brian was the Director Of Market Analysis for the American Sheep Producers Association.  He then accepted a position with the Midwest Wool Growers Association and the family moved to Hutchinson, Kansas. In the mid 70's, Brian became the Hancock County Assistant Extension Advisor and they returned to Illinois to raise their three children.  In 1979, Brian and Paula settled in Avon to fulfill a life long dream of raising sheep. After sheep farming, Brian brought goodies to many homes as the Schwans Man for 11 years. He also worked for Avon Public Schools and retired from Pella Window Manufacturing in Macomb, Illinois. Most notable, Brian and Paula owned The Clothesline Quilt Shop in Avon for 26 years. Brian's talent as a quilter was second to none!  His work ethic was endless and he always had a "to do" list.  Brian was a warm, welcoming gentleman. Everyone turned to him for his calm, thoughtful approach to life's challenges.  We will miss Brian's ingenuity, giving nature and reflective conversation.  He was happiest when peddling around on his bicycle or surrounded by grandchildren and family - a true testament to Brian and Paula's 51 years of marriage. 

Brian is preceded in death by his parents Noel and Neva Hoffmann, his sister Sharon Helms, nephew Joel Helms and niece Cheryl Helms.  Brian is survived by his wife Paula Ann Hoffmann, dog Mia, daughters Heather Anne Brown (Matthew) Des Moines, Holly Jane Repp (Steve) Avon, IL, son Mitchell Brian Hoffmann, Avon, IL, grandchildren Will, Carson, Weston and Vivian Brown, Des Moines, IA, Chase Repp, Michigan, Jacob Repp, Avon, IL and Novalee Hoffmann, Galesburg, IL.

Lance E. Robinson

Lance E. Robinson, age 54, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 11:36 AM on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, Illinois. He was born on December 29, 1961 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Donald L. and Lillian M. (Zauche) Robinson. Lance, in his early years, attended Law School in Rural Monmouth, and later attended Warren School. He worked for a number of years with his father, Don, at Robinson Electric in Monmouth. Lance had previously worked at Equipco and M.C.R./I.M.I. Cornelius also in Monmouth. Lance enjoyed attending flea markets, auctions, and the "Old Threshers" reunions. He was an avid collector of Coke memorabilia. Lance is survived by his father, Don Robinson of Woodhull, IL, one sister, Donna (Ed) Smock of rural Monmouth, IL, one brother, Leif I. (Elizabeth Loustaunau) Robinson of Tuscan, AZ, nephews; Jerry E. (Tami) Smock, Clint (Jennifer) Smock, and Tom Smock. Numerous cousins, grand nieces and nephews are also surviving. He is preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother Lillian.

Loris J. Kinsey

Loris J. Kinsey, 87, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 10:07 pm Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, Illinois.

She was born March 28, 1929 in Galva, Illinois the daughter of Simon B. and Florence McIlhardy Baldwin. She married Robert Thorne. She later married Don Kinsey of Joliet, Illinois in 1968. He preceded in death on May 13, 1978.

She is survived by two sons, Martin D. Thorne of Galesburg and Michael E. Thorne of Abingdon, Illinois; two daughters, Victoria (Butch) Allison of Oquawka, Illinois and Robin (Alan) Cottom of Galesburg; five grandchildren, Mike, Amy, Nicole, Daniel and Robert; twelve great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and one sister.

Loris was a homemaker. She had lived in Galva and Kewanee before moving to Galesburg in 1951. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 pm Friday, December 23, 2016 in Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee, Illinois. Cremation will be accorded.
